To Protest Sexist Lyrics, DU Women's Colleges Have Banned These Rappers From Fests

A number of Delhi University's women’s colleges have collectively decided that their upcoming cultural festivals would ban artists whose song lyrics contain derogatory or sexist comments about women.

The decision was taken by student union members in light of the sexual assault and molestation of women, in a crowd of thousands, on New Year's Eve in Bengaluru. The entire incident, dubbed “Night Of Shame”, has sparked a national debate about the ongoing issue of women's safety in India.

"What is the point in protesting for women's rights if we are entertained by songs which say 'I swear chhoti dress mein bomb lagdi mennu'?" Samridhi Bajaj, general secretary of the students' union, Miranda House told The Times of India.

Raavi Jotwani, vice president of the Jesus and Mary College students' union said:

"Lyrics like 'Manne suna hai tu twenty plus ho gayi and yahaan sari dance dikhari hai, gori kamar hilari hai' ('Party' by Fazilpuria), are sexist and offensive and we are not trying to promote that culture. We prefer a female artist who believes in ideas like ours and who can understand us better than someone who tears us apart in our own college on our fest. We are taught that women should be confident, competent and compassionate and the lyrics of these artists are completely opposite so they are a big 'No' for our fests."

The move has been met with positive reactions, with people agreeing that it's high time we took a stand against derogatory lyrics.
