A wild boar head is among thousands of items seized by Australian biosecurity officers in the last year from people trying to smuggle them illegally into Australia.

3,500 infringement notices were issued to travellers by Australian Border Force in the 2015/16 financial year for trying to bring items into the country that posed a risk to biosecurity.

Deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce has warned travellers not to treat biosecurity laws as a joke.

"Australia is particularly sensitive about biosecurity, and it is everyone's responsibility to keep us safe. If you take our biosecurity laws as a joke, you take our nation as a joke," Joyce said.

The government is injecting $1 million into surveillance and information systems to strengthen Australia's biosecurity.

Joyce said the new technology will screen for avian influenza, infectious salmon anaemia and foot-and-mouth disease that could harm agricultural industries and wildlife.

Earlier this month the government banned the importation of green prawns after white spot disease was discovered in Queensland prawn farms.
