White House Petitioners Ask For Conversation On Gun Control
“Nobody’s willing to start talking about this stuff, so I asked the White House if we could,” said one poster. One petition now has more than 6,200 signatures.
The White House petition platform, “We the People,” now has postings for as many as three national petitions for a debate on gun control policy.
Following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning that left at least 26 dead, White House press secretary Jay Carney told reporters at a press briefing that “today is not the day” to engage in a policy debate over gun control.
But the petitions posted on “We the People” call for President Obama to “immediately address the issue of gun control through the introduction of legislation in Congress,” reads one.
Another asks that the White House “set a date and time to have a conversation about gun policy in the United States.”
Daniel Schultz, a Daily Kos contributor, says he posted his petition because “nobody’s willing to start talking about this stuff, so I asked the White House if we could,” he told BuzzFeed. “That’s all.”
A total of 25,000 signatures on either petition will trigger the White House response threshold.
Update: One White House petition — calling on Obama to immediately “produce legislation that limits access to guns” — is picking up momentum. The appeal now has more than 6,200 signatures.

Irishgirl06 5 months agoA criminal will always find access to a gun regardless of stricter regulations or guns being outlawed. Stricter Gun control laws hurts law abiding citizens, not people who want to do harm. Why people are asking for their amendment rights to be taken away is absurd to me. Good luck defending yourself with a kitchen knife.

It’s interesting when I see the comments from many posters from the UK saying that they have very strict gun control and this kind of things don’t happen, hinting (or overtly saying) that very tight control is the answer to this.
Well, I am a Swiss citizen living in the US of A and you know what? In Switzerland, in basically EVERY house there is a FULLY AUTOMATIC ASSAULT RIFLE with a complement of 2 full mags (=60 rounds), courtesy of the Swiss armed forces (and you can easily buy commercial ammo, by the way). Now go check how many massacres in schools happen in Switzerland…
At the end of the day, it’s NOT the weapon that kills, it’s the person who commits to using it for such a heinous crime.
As a matter of fact, I believe that if more law abiding citizen had access to a firearm, this murderer wouldn’t have killed so many people.
Finally, for all those who say that guns don’t serve any other purpose than killing folks, two things:
1) SPORT —> see target shooting. Come on, it’s even in the Olympics, I am sure not many can have missed that…
2) Hunting —> there’s plenty of folks who still depend for a good chunk of their diet on animals killed by firearms… -

It seems to me that, for some people, there’ll never be a ‘good’ time to talk about gun control. I know a lot of Americans subscribe to the maxim that ‘guns don’t kill people, people kill people’, but it isn’t possible to shoot someone with a gun if you don’t have one. You will still have homicidal people, and no-one’s trying to suggest that innocent people won’t still die occasionally, but the defence for the ‘right’ to bear arms just doesn’t seem to stack up anymore. How many more times does something like this need to happen before that ‘right’ becomes what it should be - an extremely rare privilege?

see my post above. Anyway the part that addresses your point: in Switzerland every male has to serve in the military. The law requires that the weapon assigned to that individual be kept at home, WITH AMMO (60 rounds). As far as my memory can go, I don’t remember of any massacre like this.
So for Japan a no gun policy works? For Switzerland, a gun for all policy works even better.

Let’s ban guns….it totally worked with marijuana, cocaine, speed…..etc!! Those drugs are completely unavailable now due to regulation. Get smart people, a ban on guns will only deter law abiding citizens from owning them. The deranged and sick will always find ways around the laws.
