Meet The "Gareth" Ed Miliband Kept Namechecking In His Speech

He works for a software company. They met while walking on Hampstead Heath.

Ed Miliband has repeatedly namechecked individuals who have inspired his policies during his Labour party conference speech.

But he mentioned one person more than any other: a software developer called Gareth. He was mentioned so often that the name started to trend on Twitter.

Gareth is now trending above Syria on Twitter

BuzzFeed News understands that Gareth is Gareth Edwards, a Cambridge graduate who works at developer Softwire UK.

"We were having an outdoor meeting/picnic every year and [Miliband] just turned up to that," said a colleague at the company. "I'm not sure of what was said but Ed talked to a lot of people."

There had been a lot of speculation as to whether Gareth really existed:

Gareth currently exists in the same state as Schroedinger's cat: alive in the speech and yet not real

Is this the most powerful man in the Labour party? #Gareth

It's your day in the sun, Gareth.

Update: Softwire has now confirmed it's their Gareth – he's the one at the back on the left, over the shoulder.

That's Gareth, back left RT @pimterry: Ed Miliband happened to stop by the annual @SoftwireUK picnic. As you do.

@jimwaterson It was in fact while walking in the path; that's us on Hampstead Heath.

@jimwaterson Yeah, joined us for about 15 minutes or so, and asked everybody's opinion on everything about the nation, very friendly.

@jimwaterson Definitely going to have to keep this up for the picnic next year though; open invite to @David_Cameron & @Nick_Clegg!

And now the BBC has tracked down Gareth and asked whether Miliband would make a good prime minister.

This piece originally misidentified the Gareth who works at Softwire UK due to confusion when asking for the Gareth who works there. It turns out there are multiple Gareths at Softwire UK. We all live in a world of Gareths.
