Salmond Taunts "Posh Boy" Cameron After The Prime Minister's Debate Challenge

The PM said he'd like a debate between "the two leaders who can call the tune – me and Alex Salmond".

Alex Salmond has taunted "posh boy" David Cameron after the prime minister challenged the former SNP leader to a debate before the general election.

During Wednesday's Prime Minister's Questions, Cameron repeatedly claimed Labour is planning a coalition with the SNP after the election, and suggested there should be a debate between "the two leaders who can call the tune – that's me and Alex Salmond".

He went on to say that Ed Miliband can only become prime minister "on the coat-tails of the SNP".

Cameron has refused to sign up to the TV debate schedule set out by the broadcasters, which would see him face the leaders of six other parties.

But now he appears to have challenged the former first minister of Scotland to a head-to-head debate, and Salmond has hit back.

Salmond told BuzzFeed News that Cameron is a "posh boy" running away from a fight.

"Cameron ran scared during the referendum campaign and now he's running scared again," said Salmond. "He should have been called to account last year and should be called to account this year.

"Like most posh boys, given half a chance, he'll run away from a fight – Nicola Sturgeon would eat him for breakfast in a debate."

It is understood that STV has invited Cameron to debate Nicola Sturgeon – who is actually the leader of the SNP – before the general election.

Cameron has yet to respond to the invitation.
