The two North Carolina swimmers are in stable condition Monday after losing limbs in separate shark attacks.

Officials have not yet released the names of the victims, who were both in shallow, waist-deep water when the shark attacked. It was initially reported that the female victim is 13 years old, but police officials on Monday said she is in fact 12. The other victim is a 16-year-old boy.

The beach where the attacks occur remains open, Monday with officials asking swimmers to be cautious and careful in the water.

Two swimmers were mauled by sharks on Sunday in North Carolina along the same stretch of beach, local officials said.

A 12-year-old girl was bitten by a shark and lost her arm around 4 p.m. ET in Oak Island, WNCN reported.

Oak Island's mayor confirmed on Facebook that the girl lost her arm and said she may also lose her left leg. She was airlifted to a nearby hospital, Mayor Better Wallace also said.

Less than two hours later, a 16-year-old boy was attacked by a shark in the same area. Wallace said he lost his arm, WECT reported. The boy was airlifted to the same hospital as the other shark attack victim.

"I saw someone carry this girl (out of the water) and people were swarming around and trying to help," vacationer Steve Bouser told the Associated Press. "It was quite terrible."

The 12-year-old girl was bleeding profusely, and people attempted to apply makeshift tourniquets to slow the bleeding, while talking to her to try to keep her conscious.

Bouser described it as "quite nightmarish."

"It was so much like a scene from Jaws," his wife, Brenda Bouser, added.

The girl was not a resident of North Carolina, but was visiting relatives who live on Oak Island. It was not yet clear where the boy was from.

Officials at Oak Island started evacuating people from the ocean around 6 p.m., WNCN reported. An all-terrain vehicle was sent to the area to alert people to leave the water, while a helicopter was also sent to patrol the ocean for sharks.

Sunday's shark attacks happened about 30 miles from Ocean Isle Beach, where a 12-year-old girl was bitten by a shark on Thursday. The teen suffered cuts on her feet, but was not seriously injured, the ABC News reported.

The last fatal shark attack in North Carolina happened in 2009, and before that was in 2001, according to records.
