Syrian Girl In A Wheelchair Fearlessly Journeyed To Europe With Big Dreams

Nageen Mustafa has experienced many firsts on her long journey, including the first time she saw the sea. "It's beautiful, when you're not in it," she told ABC News.

Nageen Mustafa left her war-torn hometown of Kobani in Syria along with her sister in hopes of reuniting with their brother in Germany.

The 16-year-old girl, who uses a wheelchair, has trekked through Greece and Macedonia, and was at the Serbia-Hungary border Wednesday when she was interviewed on ABC News.

The journey so far has lasted 20 days, Mustafa told ABC News, describing it as "funny" because it was the first time she had seen the sea.

“It was beautiful,” she said. “When you’re not in it.”

While she said she didn’t realize how dangerous the journey would be when she started, Mustafa has maintained a positive attitude, anticipating her arrival in Germany.

“I’ve tried many things for the first time during these 20 days,” she said. “A train, a ship, and a lot of other things. The most important thing is that it’s my first time in Europe … a journey across Europe!”

Mustafa has big dreams for herself. She told ABC News she wants to become an astronaut when she grows up.

"I've always wanted what Neil Armstrong saw on the moon," she said.

As for her fluent English, Mustafa said she perfected the language despite never having gone to school by watching episodes of Days of Our Lives.
