When Sen. Ted Cruz began his first speech as a presidential candidate on Monday, he talked about his father.
The story of Rafael Cruz — growing up in Cuba, joining a revolution to overthrow Batista at age 17, jailed and tortured, and fleeing to the United States — has been an integral part of the Texas senator’s political story.
But don’t take it from Ted: Rafael is also out on the stump, telling his own story. Since his son’s election and rise as a conservative star, the elder Cruz has become a popular and prolific Tea Party speaker around the country. His life story is compelling, and it doesn’t end once he left Cuba — a straight A student, he got accepted to the University of Texas-Austin and after a family friend bribed an official to stamp his passport, made his way by ferry to Key West. There he boarded a bus for Texas where he says he learned English by repeatedly watching movies and paid his way through school working as dishwasher. His life was turned around when he found his faith in the Lord.
But at the grassroots events featuring Rafael Cruz, he often makes news in a different kind of way. “Pastor Cruz does not speak for the senator,” statements from his son’s office frequently note, when one controversial statement or another surfaces.
Rafael Cruz would like to send Obama “back to Kenya, back to Indonesia,” he said at one gathering. Obama, “probably doesn’t have any problem with what this butcher in Philadelphia is doing,” he said of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell who killed babies born alive. The “average black” doesn’t understand why the minimum wage is bad, he said at another.
A BuzzFeed News review of Cruz’s speeches finds him often making controversial, conspiracy-based claims about the Obama administration, many of which are listed below.
1. Cruz has said Fidel Castro used the rhetoric of “hope and change.”
“As some of you know, I was born in Cuba. At the age of 14 years of age I was involved in a revolution. We were suffering from a very cruel, oppressive dictatorship, and the revolution started in the high schools and the universities. So when I was 14, I was involved in the revolution. I was in the revolution four years. During that time, a young, charismatic leader rose up in Cuba, talking about hope and change. His name was Fidel Castro.”
2. Cruz has argued the Obama administration efforts for gun control are so “they can impose a dictatorship upon us.” Cruz argued Obama is trying to ban guns through the United Nations.
“The Obama administration wants to take our rights to keep and bear arms away from us. They are trying to take our God, and our gun. And if they do that, they can impose a dictatorship upon us. Now he’s been trying it through the courts, through the legislature – hasn’t gone anywhere. Now he’s trying through the United Nations. And there is now some proposals in the United Nations to try to impose a ban on guns. And of course we have a precedent, too: When Ted fought for U.S. sovereignty when the United Nations tried to impose their rule on our courts, and Ted fought defending U.S. sovereignty all of the way through the United Nations to the Supreme Court and won.”
3. Cruz says the Obama administration is “trying to undermine our sovereignty” with the “Law of the Sea Treaty” to redistribute “wealth on a global basis.” He adds, “It’s way beyond what any Communist country has ever done before.”
“Now the Obama administration is trying another avenue, through about a half a dozen treaties. Any of you heard of the Law of the Sea Treaty? Well, the Law of the Sea Treaty basically says that a percentage of the revenue from offshore oil and gas exploration, or mineral exploration, will go to be redistributed to all nations of the world. It’s redistribution of wealth on a global basis. It’s way beyond what any Communist country has ever done before. And he has a half a dozen treaties that they’re trying to push through, all trying to undermine our sovereignty.”
4. Cruz says LGBT people being called “gays” is a conspiracy to make it socially acceptable because “gay means happy!”
“We have to stop acquiescing even to the wording that the liberals use. Just think about it. They talk about — in the issue of life, they say ‘pro-life,’ or ‘pro-choice.’ That’s not the right word. It is ‘pro-life’ or ‘pro-death.’ It is ‘pro-life’ or ‘pro-murder.’ And so, it’s just like calling homosexuals ‘gays.’ Gay means happy! You know, it’s just to try to dilute it so that it becomes socially acceptable, and if you say anything against homosexual marriage or anything — ‘Oh, you’re not tolerant.’ So we’re supposed to prostitute our principles, on behalf of tolerance. Well, I’ll tell you what: there are absolutes. There are absolutes. Start being biblically correct, instead of politically correct.”
5. Cruz said President Obama’s “agenda is to bring us down to a third-world country” and wants a “redistribution of wealth on a global basis.”
“This man [Obama] does not have the interests of our country. That’s not his agenda. His agenda is to bring us down to a third-world country. This president does not believe in American exceptionalism, and he has said so … If he has his way, he will make us another third-world country. Because he is after redistribution of wealth on a global basis. But that’s not what this country’s about. This country is truly exceptional. Do you realize this is the only country in the world that was founded on the word of God?”
6. Cruz said Obama’s first act when inaugurated “was to rescind that ban on third-trimester abortions” and has made it so even babies born alive can be killed.
“The very first day that President Obama was inaugurated, his first act as a president was to rescind that ban on third-trimester abortions. And he’s even carried it further. Now, even if the baby is born alive, they have the right to kill that baby. It is an abomination.”
7. Cruz says death panels are a real part of Obamacare and that a panel of bureaucrats will tell you to “go home and die” if it is too expensive to save you.
“Actually, those death panels that Sarah Palin talked about are a part of Obamacare. And if Obamacare prevails, and we can’t get rid of it, you know, that means that – I don’t know what their priorities are, but according to their own wording, this panel of bureaucrats would decide on the basis of ‘cost-benefit’ whether you get a medical procedure or not. That means that this panel of bureaucrats would decide … ‘I don’t think you can produce enough to compensate the government or compensate society. I don’t think your value to society is that much — go home and die!’ And deny you the procedure.”
8. Cruz says the UN is trying “to restrict parental rights,” and that the U.S. is ready to agree.
“Interestingly enough, just yesterday I heard on TV that there is a new proposal of the United Nations to restrict parental rights. And from all indications, our government is ready to sign it. Let me tell you, communism does not work! Socialism does not work!”
9. Cruz says political correctness kept John McCain from saying that Obama is a Muslim.
Cruz: “So Barack Obama said, if the winds shift, I’ll side with the Muslims. “
Audience Member: “He is Muslim!”
Cruz: “McCain couldn’t say that, because it wasn’t politically correct. It’s time we stop being politically correct!”
10. Cruz says that “perhaps we ought to send” people who “go around bashing this country … to some place that is out of this country.”
“I get sad with the people that go around bashing this country and speaking against this country. Perhaps we ought to send them for a month or two to some place that is out of this country, to realize what it is to live without freedom and without liberty. But you know what happens is, we take freedom for granted in this country. And perhaps we say: ‘Well, it could never happen in America.’ Well, it is happening in America.”
11. Cruz repeats a narrative of America’s founding that includes the debunked claim that the Pilgrims “decided to try a communist experiment.”
“I looked at the pilgrims coming to America. In their first year, they decided to try a communist experiment. And the first year of the pilgrims, they established this socialistic concept: ‘Well, we have all this land before us – let us all work it together.’ Oh, how wonderful it sounded. ‘Let us all work it together, and we will share in the produce of the land.’ They almost starved to death! Almost half of them died, that very first year. But they were smart enough and flexible enough that by the second year, Governor Bradford said ‘this doesn’t work. I’ll tell you what – each one of you take your own plot of land. You work the land, you feed your family.’ And then it flourished. So the free enterprise system was born the second year the pilgrims were here. And of course, it has made America the most prosperous country in the world. … I can tell you, socialism doesn’t work. It’s never worked. And we are seeing more and more and more socialist policies being implemented in this country, left and right. But you know, as I ponder why have we been so dormant, I think the reason is that there’s a big difference from the way in which I saw my freedoms taken away almost overnight. It was a very stark contrast. Here, freedoms have been taken away just a little at a time. Just a little at a time, and we have been too complacent.”
12. Cruz says “the Obama administration has both their hands in your pocket … trying to take every hard dollar you make to give it out in handouts to buy votes.”
“Our lives are under attack. The quality of our life is being eroded more and more and more every day. Our fortunes? Let me tell you, the Obama administration has both their hands in your pocket. They’re trying to take every hard dollar you make to give it out in handouts to buy votes. And let me tell you, the money you have in your wallet is worth less and less and less every day, because the printing presses are going 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But I’ll say something: They can take our lives. They can take our fortunes. But they cannot take our honor! No one can take our honor!”
13. Other times, Cruz says Obama himself “has got both hands in your pockets.”
“Let me tell you, Obama has got both hands in your pockets. And he wants every dollar you make. Because as far as he’s concerned, it’s not your money, it’s government’s money, instead of the other way around. They’re the ones who are stealing our money to go through their extravagant lifestyles, and to — trying to promote worldwide socialism and worldwide redistribution of wealth, which is all what Obama is about. So, if we don’t stop what’s going on in Washington, your treasures are gonna disappear.”
14. Cruz says that the absence of God from atheist and secular humanist worldviews “leads to immorality … [and] sexual abuse.”
“However, the Word of God says also: ‘If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?’ The world has set other foundations. I want to talk to you quickly about two of them: One is atheism, the other is secular humanism.
“If we look at these foundations from two points of view, from the behavioral point of view, of course, they lead about people being governed by their instincts. There is no moral absolute, and this leads us to situational ethics, which unfortunately is being taught in public schools all over America. This means that right and wrong is dependent upon the circumstances. Of course, without God, there is no value to life. That leads to immorality, that leads to sexual abuse, and there is no hope. They live without hope, because there is nothing more.
“If we look at it more from a philosophical standpoint, these foundations of atheism and secular humanism believe that you are your own God. That leads us to something that unfortunately has crept into many churches across America, and it is what I call the Social Gospel. We have so many churches that are trying to become more like the world, with the excuse of attracting the world. The problem is, when the world comes, they don’t find anything different. And the social gospel, that could creep into something that is called Liberation Theology, which is a mixture of leftist, pseudo-Christianity with Marxism.
“And that leads directly to a term that we are hearing all the time in the political arena, and that is ‘social justice.’ It sounds very good, because who would want social injustice? But let me tell you what social justice really is. Social justice is collectivism. Social justice is the rights of a group. It denies individual responsibility. It’s a negation of individual responsibility, so social justice is totally contrary to the Word of God.
“That means it also destroys self-reliance, and because they don’t believe in God, instead of relying on God, they rely on government. So it promotes a life of dependency – dependency upon government. And of course that leads directly to socialism, and ultimately to communism.”
15. Cruz says that the reason the Supreme Court overturned part of DOMA is that “the only people picketing in front of the Supreme Court were the homosexuals.”
“Just in the last two months, we saw two abominable decisions from the Supreme Court, striking down the Defense of Marriage Act, and promoting homosexual marriage. And the church remained silent. As a matter of fact, the most appalling part of that is Justice Kennedy said: ‘I will be swayed by public opinion.’ He made that public, and he’s the swing vote. Well, the only people picketing in front of the Supreme Court were the homosexuals. Where was the church? How long will we remain silent? God will judge us for our silence.”
16. Cruz says that “the liberal media” serves as the Obama administration’s communist-style “Ministry of Misinformation.”
“You know what I call much of the public press? The ‘Ministry of Misinformation’ of this administration. Just like there’s a Ministry of Misinformation in almost every socialist country on the world, we got one here, too: It’s called the liberal media.”
17. Cruz says that a 19th-century sermon about a world where “Satan rules in the halls of legislation” actually “looks like we’re reading this week’s newspaper.”
“’If Satan rules in the halls of legislation’ — wow, looks like we’re reading this week’s newspaper. Single-digit approval rate. He says, ‘The pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics becomes so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away’ — are we there? Sure looks like it…”
18. Cruz says that “blacks … need to understand that this administration has not done anything for black people,” and that the administration uses minorities “as pawns.”
“And let me say this, actually — blacks, the black churches, need to understand that this administration has not done anything for black people. Black unemployment is almost twice the national average. Black unemployment under 25 years old is 40%. So its about time that minorities that are being so disenfranchised by this administration — they’re just being used as pawns — that they wake up and stop drinking the Kool-Aid.”
19. Cruz says the book of Genesis “speaks very clearly” about gay marriage: “It was Adam and Eve, it was not Adam and Steve.”
“Two months ago, two abominable laws were passed by the Supreme Court. Number one, the Defense of Marriage Act was thrown out, saying ‘No longer marriage is between a man and a woman.’ I think the book of Genesis speaks very clearly about that, right? It was Adam and Eve, it was not Adam and Steve.”
21. Cruz says that moral relativism “leads us to sexual immorality, leads us to sexual abuse, leads us to perversion, and of course, no hope.”
Cruz: “And of course, since there are no absolutes, when it’s convenient, you change the rules. Do we know any politicians that have done that?”
Man in audience: “Hitler!”
Cruz: “We don’t have to go that far, Larry. Just go to Washington. Just go to the White House. So, and of course, this leads us — when there are no moral absolutes — leads us to sexual immorality, leads us to sexual abuse, leads us to perversion, and of course, no hope.”
22. Cruz says that “our president was brainwashed for 18 years” by Jeremiah Wright’s preaching of “a perversion … called liberation theology.”
“And of course, this dilution of the Gospel leads to a dilution of those moral absolutes. And that leads us to a perversion … called liberation theology. And liberation theology is a mixture of leftist, ultra-leftist pseudo-Christianity with Marxism. It was a move that became predominant in Nicaragua, and in Peru, and of course is what Jeremiah Wright was preaching for decades, and where our President was brainwashed for 18 years. And of course, that leads you to the other term that you hear all the time: ‘social justice.’ It may sound very good, but ‘social justice’ is another cancer. Social justice is group psychology, it’s group rights, it’s collectivisim, and it’s a negation of individual responsibility, which is what the Bible teaches. Individual responsibility. And of course, social justice leads very quickly to socialism, and ultimately to communism.”
23. Cruz says that Obama “is a tyrant … who wants to rule us not different than King George was ruling” before the American Revolution.
“As the king goes, he’s taking the nation with him, unfortunately. And what we got up there in Washington is a tyrant, is a king — who wants to rule us not different than King George was ruling, and caused the American Revolution.”
24. Cruz says that he is sure that Obama “reluctantly” signed a bill (championed by Ted) that made it illegal “for a known terrorist to come to the United States as an ambassador.”
“You know, I am so proud of my son that just two weeks ago, he was able to pass a bill by unanimous decision in the House and in the Senate making it against the law for a known terrorist to come to the United States as an ambassador. And I am sure that — reluctantly — President Obama had no choice but to sign that bill, because he would have been embarrassed if it had gone back , it would have been — If he had vetoed it, it would have been overridden, because it passed by unanimous decision. Iran had appointed one of those 52 terrorists to come to the United Nations as UN ambassador. And that means to come to New York City with diplomatic immunity. God help us. But you know something? It was not coincidental that those 52 hostages were released on the day President Reagan was inaugurated.”
25. Cruz says that Obama talks about “freedom of worship” instead of “freedom of religion” because he is trying “to eradicate religion, outside the four walls of the church.”
“You need to be able to decode the rhetoric. For example, have you heard people in this administration talking about ‘freedom of worship?’ Have you heard the term? They don’t talk about ‘freedom of religion’ – they are trying to change the phrase to freedom of worship. Let me tell you what comes after that. What comes after that is what you have in Cuba today! You have freedom of worship in Cuba. Freedom of worship means you can worship inside a house of worship. That means its confined within the four walls of the church. In Cuba, there are sanctioned churches, where people can go, and they can evangelize — inside the church, they can preach. There are spies there to monitor everything they say. But it is against the law to evangelize outside the four walls of the church. That’s where the Obama administration is going, promoting this ‘freedom of worship.’ Not ‘freedom of religion,’ ‘freedom of worship’ — to eradicate religion, outside the four walls of the church. To eliminate all the influence of religion upon society.”
26. Cruz says that the Eric Holder wants to put GPS systems in all guns as the first step toward “confiscation,” and warns that “every tyrant has taken the guns away and then used them against the people.”
“Of course, you know about the new idea of Eric Holder. He calls it: ‘Smart Guns.’ A gun that only you can fire. You have to have a bracelet that sends a signal – listen carefully — by GPS to your gun. And, if you don’t have that bracelet, and you don’t send that signal by GPS to that gun, the gun won’t fire.
“Now, the fact that signal is by GPS — what else do you think the GPS does? Tells the government who has all the guns, and where they are. You know what the next step is? Confiscation.
“Now, again, look at history. Remember the lessons of history — if we don’t learn from history, we’re bound to repeat it. Stalin took away the guns. Then he killed 20 million people. Mao took away the guns, then he killed 50 million people. And the same thing with Pol Pot, and with Vario. As a matter of fact, even in my country, in Cuba — you read the history of Cuba. In Cuba there there were two wars of independence, against Spain. The first war lasted 10 years. At the end of that 10-year war, what do you think the Spanish government did? Confiscated all the guns. So when they went to the second war, in 1895, they had no guns. So they used machetes. They had machetes. And they would go with machetes, running as fast as they could, and horses, cutting heads off, and confiscating the muskets from the Spaniards.
“Every tyrant has taken the guns away and then used them against the people.
“I mean, even if you don’t look at that, it’s the most stupid idea you’ve ever heard of. Suppose you’re taking a shower, and you took that bracelet off, and an intruder walks into your house. And you jump out of the shower, naked, grabbed your gun, and your gun won’t fire! Or, you’re very, very self conscious — you take a shower with your bracelet on. And you’re taking your shower with your bracelet on, and that intruder comes in, and your wife grabs the gun, and the gun won’t fire. It’s the dumbest idea in the world. But I’ll tell you who’s gonna love it — all the people that are selling guns. I’ll tell you what, if you think we have mountains of people at the gun shows, they’re going to multiply ten times over. Because nobody’s going to want one of those guns. Conventional guns are going to cost twice as much, because everybody’s going to want one, two, three, four.
“And I’ll tell you what – probably, without exception, everybody here is going to say: ‘Nobody’s going to take my bible or my gun.’”
27. Cruz says that cap-and-trade legislation was part of Obama’s “very clear agenda” to “make us a third-world country.”
“We can choose someone that has got a very clear agenda, not only to destroy American exceptionalism, but to make us at the same least common denominator with all nations of the world. Make us a third-world country, and promote redistribution of wealth on a global basis. Not just from the 1%. It goes way beyond that. It’s worldwide redistribution of wealth. That’s what cap and trade was all about, was about taking so-called ‘carbon credits’ that your company could buy from some banana republic on the other end of the globe, and funnel hundreds of millions of dollars there, so you could keep on putting smokes out of your smokestack. It wouldn’t do anything for the environment, it would just get a transfer of wealth to the rest of the world. Along with that, we have an EPA that is totally out of control, stifling American jobs by the hundreds of thousands…”
28. Cruz says “the tentacles of communism have been infiltrated all across this land,” that “it was very, very clear” in 2008 that Obama “was a socialist,” and calls Michelle Obama a “master of manipulation” who leaves listeners “mesmerized.”
“…[T]he tentacles of communism have been infiltrated all across this land. But because of political correctness, nobody is saying anything about it. Let me tell you, when Obama campaigned in 2008, it was very, very clear that he was a socialist. The problem is most of us suffer from Ostrich Syndrome, and we purposely and deliberately stuck our heads in the sand. But he was very clear, he wasn’t trying to fool anybody. It was clear from what he was saying that he was an outright Marxist. You just didn’t want to hear it. And, if you look at the convention …
“I’m glad I watched part of the Democratic Convention. You hear this mayor from San Antonio, the young Castro, talking about pulling ourselves up from our bootstraps. When has the Democratic Party done that? When they are trying to destroy free enterprise. When Obama tells you ‘if you have a business you didn’t build it! The government built it for you.’
“And then you have the master of manipulation. I’ll tell you, that speech by Michelle Obama was emotional manipulation. Emotional manipulation. And let me tell you the scariest part of all. If you looked at the crowds, they were mesmerized. If you looked at their faces, it looked like they were looking at a goddess. Like she pushed [inaudible]. Mesmerized. They are like zombies. So you can’t reason with them. Let me tell you, they will go to the polls. They will go to the polls. So we cannot take this election for granted.”
29. Cruz says that Obama leaves the words “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance because he “is a man who seeks to destroy all concept of God,” in accordance with “classical Marxist philosophy.”
“If you’ve heard him recite the Pledge, he skips ‘under God.’ He never says those two words: ‘under God.’ And then he says: ‘Oh, it was an oversight.’ It continues, though, over and over again.
“So I’ll tell you, we have to unmask this man. This is a man who seeks to destroy all concept of God. And I’ll tell you why: This is classical Marxist philosophy. Karl Marx very clearly said it: ‘Marxism requires that we destroy God, because government must become God. And the only way for government to become God is to destroy the concept of God.’”
30. Cruz says that he’d “like to send” Obama “back to Kenya, back to Indonesia,” because he promotes “Agenda 21” and the Law of the Sea Treaty, which are actually covert plans to “give our resources to the United Nations.”
“And I will tell you, the path of this administration is to make us a third world country, and to make us subject to the United Nations.
“Sustainable development, or better known as ‘Agenda 21,’ is all about destroying property rights, and it’s all about global redistribution of wealth. And along with that, if you want to look at the Law of the Sea Treaty, which Obama is very hard trying to push through. Fortunately, enough voices have spoken about it, and I think conservatives in the Senate are aware of how damaging it would be.
“But that would give our resources to the United Nations, and have us pay duties to the United Nations. They are pushing very hard for the United Nations to have taxing authority. And Obama is very much one of the big promoters of this.
“So I’ll tell you, we have our work cut out for us. We need to send Barack Obama back to Chicago – I’d like to send him back to Kenya, back to Indonesia. But not only that – we absolutely need to retake the Senate. It is imperative that we take the Senate.”
31. Before the 2012 election, Cruz warned that if the Republicans did not win, “there’s a very strong possibility this country will be destroyed by Barack Obama in the next four years.”
“If we do not take this country back in this election, there’s a very strong possibility this country will be destroyed by Barack Obama in the next four years. We cannot afford to do that.”
32. Cruz says that Obama’s “attack against religion” is really an “attack against Christianity,” because kids are sent home from school for wearing Jesus t-shirts, but not for wearing turbans.
“Today, if a kid comes with a t-shirt that says ‘Jesus,’ they send him home to change. Now, he can come with a turban, nobody messes with him. It is not an attack against religion, it is an attack against Christianity, out in the open.”
33. Cruz says “people of Hispanic descent … should all be Republicans,” but “[t]hey have been brainwashed by La Raza, who is a Marxist organization, and LULAC, which is an arm of the Democratic Party.”
“But I’ll tell you, one way we can reach people of Hispanic descent is talk about values. These people are very strongly pro-family, they are very strongly pro-life, very strongly against homosexuality, very strongly against traditional marriage, very strongly for free enterprise. They should all be Republicans! They have been brainwashed by La Raza, who is a Marxist organization, and LULAC, which is an arm of the Democratic Party, just like AARP is an arm of the Democratic Party. So we just need to woo them, talking about principles, and the principles that they believe.”
34. Cruz says that “a group of sexual deviants in this country, which compose maybe 2 to 3% of the population” are “driving the political agenda in this country.”
“Social justice is not a biblical concept. On the contrary, social justice is the negation of individual responsibility, which is a Judeo-Christian ethic. Each and every one of us is responsible for our actions before God. Social justice is the mob rule, is the rights of the group. Pastor Rick was talking earlier about a group of sexual deviants in this country, which compose maybe 2 to 3% of the population, driving the political agenda in this country. That’s ‘social justice.’ While the church is silent.”
35. Cruz says that in the absence of faith in God, government creates “a new class of dependency” which “inexorably leads to socialism” and “a tyrannical government controlling every aspect of your life” — and that this is “occurring before our very eyes.”
“So God doesn’t exist, so you can’t rely on God, so what do you do? You rely on government. And so you create now a class of dependency. And a class of dependency, instead of — remember what we talked about a minute ago, about living a life of contribution? Now it is the opposite. It’s living the life of taking, of becoming parasites, of a so-called benevolent god-with-a-little-g. And the government becomes your God. And of course, when this dependent class becomes bigger and bigger and bigger, it inexorably leads to socialism. And that means you have a tyrannical government controlling every aspect of your life. And we’re seeing that occurring before our very eyes, more and more and more every day.”
36. Cruz says that “the Greens of today are the Reds of the last generation,” and that “the whole environmental movement is nothing more than just an insidious thing to destroy this country.”
“You know, I heard someone say the other day: ‘The Greens of today are the Reds of the last generation. They just have a new label now.’ And the whole environmental movement is nothing more than just an insidious thing to destroy this country.”
37. Cruz says that “if there are two entities of the federal government that have done more harm to destroy America, to destroy our economy, it is the EPA and the Endangered Species Act.”
“Let me tell you another word that is not in Article 1, Section 8. It’s the word ‘environment.’ Nowhere in Article 1, Section 8. Let me say this, if there are two entities of the federal government that have done more harm to destroy America, to destroy our economy, it is the EPA and the Endangered Species Act.”
38. Cruz tells parents to “do what you can to get your kids out of public school,” because they’re being given “a brainwashing no different than what has happened in the Marxist countries for generations.”
“Praise God for those of you who do homeschool. I can’t emphasize enough: Do what you can to get your kids out of public school. If you can’t afford to put them in a private Christian school, homeschool. Because they’re being poisoned in the public schools. They’re being brainwashed in the public schools, with all this secularism, with all this immorality that is being immersed into them on a daily basis. It is a brainwashing no different than what has happened in the Marxist countries for generations. And when you realize — who was the founder of American education? John Dewey — you know that very well — card-carrying Communist. The American education system, in America — one of the so-called ‘founders’ was a Communist!”
39. Cruz says that “government legislates morality all the time,” but “if it is the wicked that are governing, what they are legislating is their immorality.”
“You see, one of the lies that we have bought from the government is: ‘Government cannot legislate morality.’ That’s another one that you probably heard every day! You’ve heard preachers say it, you’ve heard people say — ‘Oh, government cannot legislate morality.’ And that’s their excuse for not getting involved. Let me tell you this: Government legislates morality all the time. The problem is, if it is the wicked that are governing, what they are legislating is their immorality! And they are cramming it down our throats!”
40. Cruz says that he’s hea”1 out of every 4 men in the church are involved in pornography,” and that the great majority of sexual assaults were perpetrated by people that were looking at pornography and they wanted to make a reality what they were seeing…”
“I heard a statistic, and this one blew my mind, that 1 out of every 4 men in the church are involved in pornography. And yet, when was the last time you heard a pastor talk about pornography? … Talk to people in law enforcement, and they will tell you that the great majority of sexual assaults were perpetrated by people that were looking at pornography and they wanted to make a reality what they were seeing in the pornography.”
41. Cruz says Obama refused to call the Boston Marathon bomber a terrorist because of political correctness — and that the media refused to cover the trial of Kermit Gosnell, “the biggest mass murderer” in American history, for similar reasons.
“Did you see, after this horrific tragedy in Boston, that Obama cannot utter the word ‘terrorist.’ It’s not politically correct. He even called the Fort Hood murderer ‘workplace violence.’ Because it’s politically incorrect to talk about ‘jihad,’ or to talk about ‘terrorist,’ or to talk about ‘the war on terror.’ He won’t say those words, because they’re politically incorrect.
As a matter of fact, the epitome of political correctness has been occurring in the city of Philadelphia for the last two months. In the city of Philadelphia for the last two months we have had the trial of without a doubt the biggest mass murderer this country has ever had: a doctor by the name of Gosnell, who has killed hundreds of babies with an abortion clinic where babies are born alive and they have been snipping their spinal cord.
However, you don’t hear a peep out of CBS, NBC, ABC, MSNBC — I call them ‘the Ministry of Misinformation.’ Just like there was a Ministry of Misinformation in Russia and in all the communist countries, we have one in this country – and it is the media. The media is manipulated by Obama, and they don’t want to cover this trial, because it will go against their agenda of promoting abortion on demand. And it is one of the most horrific crimes that has occurred in this nation.”
42. Cruz says that the “fact” that the first bill Obama signed was to “legalize third-trimester abortions” means “he probably doesn’t have any problem with what this butcher in Philadelphia has been doing.”
“Do you realize that the very first bill President Obama signed into law was to legalize third-trimester abortions? He did that in his first 24 hours in office. Something that President Bush had made illegal. That was his first act. Three times, while he was a senator – I just heard that on Hannity as I was coming over here – three times, when he was a Senator in Illinois, there was a bill to decree that a baby that is born alive is a human being. And he refused to sign such a bill. He voted against it. So, he probably doesn’t have any problem with what this butcher in Philadelphia has been doing.”
43. Cruz says that black people and Latinos vote Democratic because they are “low-information voters” whom Republicans “have to educate.”
“Now, you ask them — well, why are they voting Democrat? They’re voting Democrat for two reasons. I was on a radio interview in McAllen just before the election, and I was precisely talking about this issue, and I was addressing Hispanics. And I was telling these Hispanics: ‘Look — you probably vote Democrat because your parents voted Democrat. And your grandparents voted Democrat. But let me tell you something: Thirty years ago, we had two parties in Texas — liberal Democrats and conservative Democrats. Considering the values of Hispanics, in all probability, your parents were conservative Democrats. The conservative Democrats of 30 years ago are Republicans, today.’
“That is a message we need to communicate not just to Hispanics, but to African Americans – to people who are what Rush Limbaugh calls ‘low-information voters.’ And, as a matter of fact, look at unemployment …
“And you can make the same argument for African-Americans. Everything African-Americans — every freedom they have obtained — came from Republicans, not Democrats. All the way back to the Emancipation Proclamation, to the Civil Rights movement. Civil Rights legislation was passed by a Republican Congress. It was just that Kennedy and Johnson took the credit for it, but it was passed by a Republican Congress. And actually, what is Obama doing for the black population, when the black unemployment is almost twice the average unemployment?
“So what we have to do, is we have to educate people. It is a matter of communication. It is a matter of communicating the truth. For example, going back to your question about Hispanics: There are two organizations in this country that are brainwashing Hispanics with liberal propaganda. One is La Raza, and La Raza is an organization that is so far to the left that many consider it a Marxist organization. The other one is LULAC — LULAC is an arm of the Democratic Party. And did you know that LULAC has chapters in every university in this country? We have to do the same. Please support young Republicans.”
44. Cruz says that “bilingual education” programs for non-native English speakers leaves children “doomed to be second-class citizens.”
“To give you an idea – you hear LULAC heavily promoting something that they call ‘bilingual education.’ And it sounds very good. Oh, bilingual education. And they say ‘Oh, we’re going to be able to teach your kids in your own language, so they can get the most out of school…’
“Let me tell you how I interpret bilingual education. If I am telling you, Kaye, that I want to give bilingual education to your kids — say you are Hispanic — you know what I am telling you? ‘What I want to do is make sure that your daughters are my maids, and your sons are going to be my gardeners!’ Because if you do not learn English in this country, you cannot get anywhere. We are in America. We are not in Mexico, we are not in China, we are not in Saudi Arabia — we speak English in this country! And what bilingual education does, is keep them from learning English, so they are doomed to be second-class citizens.
“It’s the same thing as affirmative action. When affirmative action was passed, it was trying to correct a wrong, but the challenge with affirmative action was — if you recall when Kennedy passed an edict, ‘Every person you hire in the Post Office must be African American,’ the challenge with that is if all of a sudden, you are hired just because of the color of your skin, ability has nothing to do with it. And if ability has nothing to do with it, what does it do? It promotes mediocrity. And you know, the greatness of this country is that you can achieve anything you want, if you work hard, if you have the determination, if you try to be better than the other person. And if we remove that desire to be better, we become mediocre.”
45. Cruz says that “homosexual marriage” is “really more about the destruction of the traditional family than about exalting homosexuality, because you need to destroy also loyalty to the family” in order to make people wholly dependent on government.
“And listen, we need to understand the foundations of what is being done. When you hear this attack on religion, it’s not really an attack on religion. The fundamental basis is this: Socialism requires that government becomes your God. That’s why they have to destroy the concept of God. They have to destroy all loyalties except loyalty to the government.
“That’s what is behind homosexual marriage. It’s really more about the destruction of the traditional family than about exalting homosexuality, because you need to destroy also loyalty to the family.”
46. Cruz says that “the average black” does not understand “how all the handouts to blacks have kept blacks … in the poorhouse.”
“I tell you, I am going to try to encourage everybody I can to buy a book written by a black journalist. His name is Jason Riley. He wrote a book called Please Stop Helping Us, talking about how all the handouts to blacks have kept blacks as, as, you know, in the poorhouse. And I’ll tell you what, I am going to make it my task to buy 15, 20 copies of that book, and hand it out to some black leaders to read…
“See, he understands it. But the average black does not.”
47. Cruz says that “there’s nothing scientific about evolution,” but “evolution is one of the strongest tools of Marxism, because if they can convince you that you came from a monkey, it’s much easier to convince you that God does not exist.”
“Now let me share something with you, because – you know, communism, socialism, whatever you want to call it – what’s happening in this country, it’s no different than what happened in Cuba. The procedure might be different, they may be a little slower, but it’s the same thing. It is about government control of your lives. And you’ve gotta realize how Marxism, how socialism works, and we need to understand the issues.
“When you hear all these things about homosexual marriage, this has nothing to do with homosexual rights — did you know that? The whole objective is the destruction of the traditional family. It has nothing to do with homosexuals. They could care less about homosexuals. They want to destroy the family.
“You gotta understand, it’s just like evolution. You know, most Americans have their head in the sand about evolution. I met so many Christians who tell me: ‘Well, evolution is a scientific fact.’ Baloney! I am a scientist — there’s nothing scientific about evolution. But you know something, Karl Marx said it: ‘I can use the teachings of Darwin to promote communism.’ Why? Because communism — or call it socialism, if you think communism is too hard a word — necessitates for government to be your god. And for government to be your God, they need to destroy the concept of God. That’s why communism and evolution go hand in hand. Evolution is one of the strongest tools of Marxism. Because if they can convince you that you came from a monkey, it’s much easier to convince you that God does not exist.”
48. Cruz says that “all of this anti-Christian rhetoric that you see coming from the government” is part of “an effort to make you realize that God is your government.”
“So all this anti-Christian rhetoric that you see coming from the government, all this anti-Christian push, is not really an attack on Christianity. It’s an effort to make you realize that God is your government. Your government is God. You understand what I’m saying? Because they need to destroy all allegiances. No allegiance to the family, no allegiance to God. Your allegiance must be to government. Have you ever heard President Obama quote the preamble to the Declaration of Independence?”
49. Cruz says that “Agenda 21 is all about confiscation of private property. And it’s insidious, and it’s permeating all of America.”
“And by the way, there’s more than one way to confiscate private property. Any of you heard of Agenda 21? Agenda 21 is all about confiscation of private property. And it’s insidious, and it’s permeating all of America. It’s about time we wake up and push back.”
50. Cruz says that “when [Obama] says, ‘I have a pen and a phone; these are the rules,’ … he’s got a billy club in his hand, and people are like sheep going to the slaughter.”
“Well there are executive orders, and then there are executive orders. Most of the executive orders that other presidents have done are procedural executive orders — just to deal with a procedure or something like that. The executive orders that this president is writing is making law, which is contrary to the Constitution, violates the separation of powers, the legislature is the one that makes laws. The president is supposed to execute faithfully the laws that the legislature has written. So, the executive orders that this president is writing are without precedent. Without precedent so with he’s rewriting law. It’s totally illegal. But you see, when he says, ‘I have a pen and a phone; these are the rules,’ and he’s got a billy club in his hand, and people are like sheep going to the slaughter.”
51. Cruz says that the Obama administration “wants to promote the concept of ‘hyphenated Americans,’” because it is trying to “create a vast dependent society upon government” which it thinks will also be “a permanent voting base to maintain them in power.
“This administration wants to promote the concept of hyphenated Americans. This administration is bent on what they call ‘social justice.’ Now, we need to define the terms. The term ‘social justice’ sounds very good, but basically social justice is collectivism. It is the rights of the group, and it denies individual responsibility.
“So this whole concept of looking at all these different hyphenated groups, whether it is — and even, any other groups. I mean, they even consider women as a separate group. And so, it is a divide-and-conquer concept.
“And one of the things that this administration has been doing is look at each one of those so-called groups as victims of society, and pushing them into a dependent status so that they can keep them under their thumb. The whole concept is that if they can create a vast dependent society upon government, then they think they have a permanent voting base to maintain them in power. And I think we don’t need to be talking about hyphenated Americans, because we are all Americans, and we all want the same thing.”
52. Cruz says that Obama’s desire to raise taxes on those making over $250,000 a year is “not much different” from when “the Castro government began confiscating all” the property of the Cuban middle class.
“See, the reason that I bring this story is this: Because of what I experienced in Cuba, I have become a student of what, how communism operates. And you see, there is a reason why you see such an antagonism to religion. Because communism necessitates the destruction of religion for one reason. Communism needs for government to be your God. So there cannot be any alliance to anything but government. So an alliance to God must be destroyed. That’s why socialism and anti-religion go together. It’s not, doesn’t have anything to do with a social issue; it has to do with the fact that socialism wants you to thinks of government as your God. It is not a coincidence that every time our president quotes the preamble of the Declaration, he always omits ‘by our Creator.’ When he talks about those inalienable rights which he has trampled upon all three of them. But he omits those words because he wants you to think that those rights come from government. But let me warn you: If government is the one that gives you those rights, government can take them away. And so there is this antagonism to religion, just to eliminate that alliance.
“The second area is destroy the family. Destroy loyalty to the family. Those same kids, even from kindergarten, were told ‘If you hear your parents talking against the government, it is your civic duty to denounce your kids. Your parents. Denounce your parents. Go turn them in to the police.’ You remember the chantings in the kindergartens, here? You remember those? It’s the same sort of thing. He is your God. That’s your alliance. Not to your parents. We see systematically taught in our high schools today that kids not have to hear their parents, that they can make their own rules, and not even live by what their parents, so there’s no guidance from the parents. And there’s a concerted effort why – government must be their God. Now, we look at what happened then – since the rich became evil, Castro began confiscating all the wealth. And by the way, all the wealth didn’t mean multimillionaires. Why do you think there’s so many thousands of Cuban doctors in Florida? Because they all had to leave Cuba. Because doctors were rich, and so the Castro government began confiscating all their property. Not much different from this plan to tax you at a higher rate if you and your family, you and your spouse make over $250,000. You’re rich! So they must confiscate more your money.
“And let me tell you, that’s what taxation is — it’s confiscation. It’s your money, it’s not the government’s money. But the government makes you think that it all comes from them. No, no, no. It’s our money that he’s taking. To do what? To hand out money to people to keep them from doing what they’re best at doing.”
53. Cruz says it “is true” that Latinos and blacks have been “uninformed, or deceived” into voting for Democrats and they only vote for Democrats because their parents did.
“Now, let’s look at what’s happening here at home. If we see the destruction of our economy in this country, during the last four, almost four-and-a-half years, it’s really appalling that in four year’s we’ve increased our debt by over 60%, that we have some of the highest unemployment that we’ve had in years and years. As a matter of fact, as I was this afternoon sitting at the panels that you had, there was a panel on how to reach minorities. And you know, all we have to do – and there was, Mr. Gonzales mentioned something about Hispanics being uninformed, or deceived. Well the same thing is true with the black population. As a matter of fact, if we could communicate the truth, not only to the Hispanics but to the black population, all blacks should be Republican, and all Hispanics should be Republican. […]
“You know, I was speaking on the radio in South Texas, and I was speaking to Hispanics, and I said ‘You know, you probably vote Democrat because your parents always voted Democrat, and your grandparents always voted Democrat, but let me tell you something. Thirty years ago in Texas, there were two parties — liberal Democrats and conservative Democrats. Looking at your principles, your values as Hispanics, in all probability your parents were conservative Democrats. The conservative Democrats of 30 years ago are Republicans today!’ And we need to communicate this message to Hispanics that are voting Democrat because daddy and granddaddy voted Democrat. They were very different Democrats they voted for. […]
“We need to change our message, and we need to show them — you know, as a matter of fact, someone again in the panel was talking this afternoon about the Democrats being the party of the poor. And that’s the truth. The Democrat is the party that’s gonna keep you poor! You wanna get out of being poor? Then you need upward mobility. You don’t need a hand-out, you need a hand-up! And that’s what we need to portray: ‘Look, do you want to live in mediocrity? Because that’s all that the entitlements are going to do for you. Keep you living in the lowest socio-economic scale. Let me give you a hand, and move you up, and start up that economic ladder, because this is the land of opportunity.’ I came to the country without speaking a word of English, without a penny, worked full time, 40 hours a week, went to school full time, opened my own small business, ended up being a multi-millionaire. If I can do it, without even knowing the language, anybody can do it. All it takes is determination, perseverance, and like Winston Churchill said: ‘Never, never, never, never give up.’”
54. Cruz says that the “end-of-life” counseling provisions in Obamacare are actually about providing the elderly with “suicide counseling.”
“At the other end, Obamacare, with denying care to the elderly, with care being rationed, with care being postponed for 12 to 18 months, with care being controlled by a group of bureaucrats that on the basis of cost-benefit will decide whether you get a medical procedure or not — they’re destroying our end of life. As a matter of fact, one of the things in Obamacare is that for the elderly, every five years you must have end-of-life counseling. Translation: suicide counseling.”
55. Cruz says that the government “created a drought in Southern California” to protect a “little minnow,” because “Agenda 21 is all about … the worship of Mother Earth.”
“Let me make a little parentheses here – there is more than one way to confiscate private property. Have any of you heard of Agenda 21? Agenda 21 is all about confiscation of private property. It’s all about the worship of Mother Earth. You know in California they are trying to tear down all the dams, to let the rivers flow freely. They created a drought in Southern California to save the little fish. Little minnow. Just like they tried to do with a lizard in west Texas.”
56. Cruz says that “Obamacare is all about … controlling our lives, controlling one-fifth of the economy, and controlling every bit of your life.”
“Now covetousness in government is not so much about money, as it is about power and control. Boy, they covet that power! It’s all about control. That’s what Obamacare is all about – it’s about controlling our lives, controlling one-fifth of the economy, and controlling every bit of your life.”
57. Cruz says that “the death panels are in Obamacare” — and that because “this panel will be independent of Congress, independent of the president — it will become a dictatorship within a dictatorship.”
“You remember how maligned Sarah Palin was, when she mentioned about the death panels? Well let me tell you, the death panels are in Obamacare. It’s a panel of 16 bureaucrats that will decide whether you get a procedure or not. Now let me tell you the most ominous thing about those death panels — they’re called IPABs, I-P-A-B, IPABs — is that in 1917, there’s a very small window in which Congress can intervene with these panels, a window of about a month. After that, this panel will be independent of Congress, independent of the president — it will become a dictatorship within a dictatorship. So that’s what socialized medicine is.”
58. Cruz says that “what’s happened in this country, with this concept of all these hand-outs, and just trying to really buy votes … lowers everybody to a lowest common denominator,” and that “Obama has taken it way beyond what Castro did.”
“Absolutely. And you know, what you quoted, about what’s called ‘the law of sowing and reaping’ is absolutely the basis of free enterprise. Because you sow according to how much – you reap according to how much you sow. And that means the more you work, the more you develop, the more rewards you’re going to get. And that’s the problem with the socialist model, because the socialist model – if you work twice as hard as I do, and you get just the same amount, pretty soon you decide that it’s foolish for you to do more than I. So everybody goes down to a least common denominator, and as a result, productivity goes down to zero. And we’ve seen that in every communist country around the world.
“You just look at what’s happened in this country, with this concept of all these hand-outs, and just trying to really buy votes, by putting multitudes of people on the dole, relying upon government handouts, becoming totally dependent on government. That destroys self-worth, it destroys ingenuity, and the ability to want to pursue the American dream, and achieve your goals and your aspirations in life. And so it lowers everybody to a lowest common denominator.
“But you know, you were talking a minute ago about redistribution of wealth – well, even Obama has taken it way beyond what Castro did. Because Castro was redistributing wealth within the country. Obama, for example, he has not given up on cap-and-trade. Now, he has not been able to pass cap-and-trade, but cap-and-trade is all about redistribution of wealth in a global basis – taking money out of this country and giving it to third-world countries on the other end of the ocean. And that is redistribution of wealth in a global basis. It’s fundamental Marxism.”
59. Cruz says that if 55 million abortions had not taken place in America, “we would not have any debt.”
“Who knows how many great presidents, how many great preachers, how many great scientists have been murdered in those 55 million babies? As a matter of fact, did you know that if those 55 million babies were alive, and contributing to our economy, and our society, we would not have any debt? Our economy would be a million times better.”
61. Cruz says that the title of her book proves that Hillary Clinton believes that “your children are not your children,” and that “that culture of dependency leads to a life of slavery, being totally dependent upon government.”
“How many times did we hear Obama say, ‘You didn’t build that. You didn’t build that —no, you need government.’ We even saw Hillary Clinton say — remember her phrase — ‘It takes a village to raise a child.’ In other words, your children are not your children — they belong to the community. They want to destroy the family also. It’s very insidious. And that culture of dependency leads to a life of slavery, being totally dependent upon government. And government dictates where they go in life. That life of government control and a dependent society is called socialism, and that’s where we’re heading if we do not turn this country around.”
62. Cruz says an ordinance protecting LGBT rights passed by the city council in Houston will men on high school football teams to force girls to shower with them and if they refuse they can be sued.
“Just a couple of years ago, it began with the Supreme Court striking down parts of the Defense of Marriage Act. And look what’s happening in municipality after municipality across America. In Houston, Texas, in the heart of the Bible Belt, that city has a lesbian for a mayor. Well a few months ago, that mayor and that city council passed an ordinance that if a man today feels like a woman, he has the right to walk into a woman’s bathroom. And if a woman is in there and she complains, she can be sued for that man because she is violating his civil rights. As a matter of fact, according to that ordinance, if the football team in the high school decides that they want to shower with the girls, and the girls complain, the girls can be sued. This is an abomination!”
63. Cruz suggests prayer being taken out of school is responsible for the rise in teen pregnancy and violent crime.
“You know, 1962 and 1963, there were two abominable decisions out of the Supreme Court, and that was taking prayer out of school, and taking bible reading out of school. But you know, if you look at the statistics, two very critical things happened after that date. Number one: teen pregnancy skyrocketed. Number two: violent crime skyrocketed. So it’s very coincidental, which leads us to think that perhaps there was a correlation between taking prayer and Bible study out of schools, and what has happened in our society.”
64. Cruz says Obama has “a totalitarian view of government being all-powerful” and wants to destroy American exceptionalism.
“I think his worldview is based upon a totalitarian view of government being all-powerful. This is why he’s so focused on redistribution of wealth, on destroying the exceptionalism of America. And I see it — you know, he’s been pushing forever for cap and trade. And cap and trade is all about a global redistribution of wealth. He’s also, unfortunately for him, has not been able to push through Congress and the Senate the Law of the Sea treaty, which will also be redistribution of wealth. I think he is all about looking at America as an imperialistic regime, and I think he wants to make us part of that least common denominator.”
65. Cruz says “the EPA is controlling almost every aspect of our lives” and if the left had their “they would do away with the whole Bill of Rights.”
“And of course, the infringement upon our civil liberties, that we see — an encroachment more, and more, and more every day. Whether it is through taxation or through regulation, the EPA is controlling almost every aspect of our lives. And we see our liberties curtailed more and more and more. And right now, we see a tremendous attack on religious freedom. And, as a matter of fact, I think if the left had their way, they would do away with the whole Bill of Rights.”
66. Cruz says climate change is all “hocus-pocus” and “the only thing it’s done is made Al Gore a multi-millionaire.” Cruz says climate change is used as a “way to curtail growth, to destroy the growth, exploration.”
“You gotta realize that the whole fiasco of the environment, all this global warming hocus-pocus — which the only thing it’s done is made Al Gore a multi-millionaire — but, what it’s done is, it has been used as a way to curtail growth, to destroy the growth, exploration. We’ve got, not only the Alaskan pipeline is not being built, and that oil, Canada may decide to sell it to China, and we may lose that oil forever. And then how much they are attacking fracking — did you realize that we have enough reserves in this country to be totally energy independent?”
67. Cruz says Latinos and blacks only vote Democratic because it’s tradition, “instead of according to their values and what is in their best interest.”
“And I think we have a challenge of education, a challenge of communicating this message. And I think if we do that, a lot of those Hispanics will come to vote according to their conscience, instead of voting tradition, which is what has happened — not just with the Hispanic population, but also with the African-American population. They’re taken for granted, and they are voting according to tradition, instead of according to their values and what is in their best interest.”
68. Cruz says people become slaves to government “through taxation, through regulation, through all kinds of restrictions, that makes us not free anymore.”
“This is why, also, there’s such an attack on the family on the part of the administration… In any socialist government, they must destroy all alliances other than your alliance to the government, and they want the government to become your God. That for you to totally depend upon government. So we become slaves to government, through taxation, through regulation, through all kinds of restrictions, that makes us not free anymore.”
