At least five climbers were killed in an avalanche Tuesday in the French Alps, the BBC reported. The avalanche occurred around midday local time on the 13,000-foot summit of Dôme de Neige des Ecrins, located in the Massif des Ecrins range.

Two climbers are still missing and another one was reportedly found alive but injured from the group of eight climbers, according to local reports.

The five victims included three Czech citizens and two Germans, Le Parisien reported. A Polish climber was reportedly injured during the avalanche but survived.

The summit is popular with climbers because of its easy access and sweeping views. Officials told Le Parisien that the weather was relatively good with little indication of an avalanche.

Two helicopters, search dogs and 12 specialist high mountain military police are involved in ongoing search and rescue efforts, The Local Fr reported.
