How Much Money Would The Characters On "Mad Men" Be Making Today?
Nice work if you can get it — although Peggy seems to be stuck in episode one. Her ’60s salary is the only specific number mentioned on the show and, based solely on inflation, she’d now be making over 120,000 a year, so maybe it’s safe to assume that some of the talents at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce would be making more than the national average.

McJesse 10 months agoI call banana-games on this whole chart! I don’t see how if we agree Peggy Olson makes 120,000 Don would be making 80,000. Also, someone making 80’000 a year today wouldn’t have a posh NYC apartment, be able to support 2 families, and have enough money to keep all those hookers quiet. BANANA-GAMES I SAY!

chariot13 10 months agoThis just shows that while infographics are pretty, they still come from a flawed place: statistical analysis. Clearly whoever put this together is using a national average for those salaries and job requirements instead of an average from the top ad agencies in NYC (which, if you’re going to make a comparison to Mad Med, that is the pool you should be pulling your data from). I would really like to meet the Creative Director at a place like Ogilvy or Arnold or BBDO who only makes $80,000 and got the job with 1 year experience.

datebynumbers 10 months agoNone of the sources are ad agencies. That’s why it so grossly miscalculates the amount of drinking we do in the office.

Summer Anne Burton 10 months agoIt’s fascinating to me to see in the comments here how some people think that these positions are paid way more than this, and some people are saying way less, and some people are saying you would need a college degree for all these positons and some people are saying you don’t need one for any of them. I think it just proves that averaging out salaries nation-wide probably doesn’t reflect any one individual’s experience in advertising, because so much depends on location and the size of a given agency. I know a lot of people in advertising, and some of them make a lot more than this and some of them make less (and most of them do have college degrees, but not all of them)… That’s why it’s noted as national averages, not a guaranteed accurate snapshot of all the conditions at SCDP.

jimir2 10 months agoThis may be an average of people with that title nation-wide but to be at one of the more successful firms in New York today would leave Don Draper at over $200,000, and the other two guys at probably half a million per year. Pete Campbell would be making six figures. And Peggy would be at least $50,000 and would need a college education. No one would be working at one of those firms without going to college.

Andy Pearson 10 months agoThese numbers and stats are grossly off. As someone in advertising, I can tell you that the salaries are totally incorrect. Also, no degree is required for any position. If you’re good, you’re in. And a :30 spot is still the standard.

crackers 10 months agoAs someone in advertising, these numbers are really off. A Creative Director would be making at least $100k; at at larger agencies, much more than that. Also, the creative positions aren’t listed: Peggy’s current role as Copywriter would start around $35k for a junior, raise to $60k for a mid-level, and to $85k for a senior position. Lastly - drinking is still very much a part of the culture. Beer is as freely supplied as bottled water, and larger agencies even have in-house bars and lounges.
