Pit Bull Attacks And Kills Man Apparently Trying To Help Its Ailing Owner

Two West Virginia men are dead after one suffered a medical emergency and another was killed by a dog while apparently trying to assist the ailing man, police say.

A West Virginia man died Sunday after he was attacked by a pit bull while apparently trying to help the dog's owner, who was suffering from a medical emergency.

David Wallace, 63, and Roy A. Higgenbotham Jr., 62, both died Sunday after being taken to a local hospital, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

The two men lived at the same address but did not live together, a police spokesman told BuzzFeed News. Authorities believe the house was split into two separate areas, with one man living upstairs and the other downstairs.

Fire officials were called to the scene on Sunday after a report that a man was suffering a medical condition in the home.

When fire personnel arrived, they observed the dog attacking a man and called the Wheeling Police Department, the spokesman said.

Authorities believe that one of the men was trying to help the man suffering the medical condition, but was attacked by the ailing man's dog. Authorities didn't specify which victim was which in a press release.

The spokesman said authorities are not one hundred percent sure what happened, but "that's how it appears."

"This dog didn't just go down the street and attack this guy," he said.

The causes of death for both men are pending awaiting autopsies. The dog is in quarantine at the local department of animal control, and the spokesman said he is unsure what will become of the animal.
