i don’t understand how the emoji with the turban is racist. there are people who wear turbans…it’s a fact. wouldn’t it be racist NOT to have an emoji wearing a turban…because it would be discrimination against that culture to not feature it, and to only feature people of western cultures?

I like that a stereotype of an “Indian” passes as acceptable. I’m sure it’s also meant to be interchangeable with Arabs and anyone who is brown and not a Christian. If they are brown and Christian, why they can just use the mariachi band figure. I don’t understand the need for one when it’s just going to be a cruel stereotype.

I think the company that creates emoji apps is Japanese (maybe I’m just fooled by the word “emoji” but there are a lot of sushi/noodle dishes in the food emojis and a lot of hiragana as well, at least in my app). That’s probably to blame for the lack of diversity in the “standard” emojis (smiley face, frowny face, kissy face, etc), while I’d say the ethnic ones portray stereotypes more than anything else.
