Applebee’s Server Gets Stiffed By Pastor Who Gave Her Tip To God, Promptly Gets Fired By Applebee’s
“I give God 10%, why do you get 18%,” a local pastor wrote on her receipt before tipping her nothing.
1. The Applebee’s server, who goes by Chelsea, posted this on Reddit Monday.
2. “They had no problem with my service, and told me I was great. They just didn’t want to pay when the time came.”
3. “[The tip] was only compulsory because it was a table of 20. Parties up to eight at my work may tip whatever they’d like, but larger parties receive an automatic gratuity. It’s in the computer, it’s not something I do.”
4. Consumerist has now learned that Applebee’s fired the server after the receipt hit the front page of Reddit.
Chelsea spoke to Consumerist about the fallout after she posted the receipt to Reddit:
“I originally posted the note as a lighthearted joke… I thought the note was insulting, but it was also comical. I posted it to Reddit because I thought other users would find it entertaining.”
The original photo Chelsea posted contained the pastor’s signature. After it began to go viral, the customer contacted Applebee’s and demanded that not only Chelsea be fired, but everyone who worked at that location be fired.
Chelsea told Consumerist that she was just trying to blow off some steam by anonymously posting it to Reddit, not lose her job. Before posting the receipt, she had worked there without incident.
5. HuffPost Comedy has started a petition to get Applebee’s to rehire her.
7. UPDATE: The Smoking Gun has found more info about the pastor, Alois Bell, who left the non-tip.
In a TSG interview, Alois Bell said that the online firestorm created by the receipt has left her stunned. “My heart is really broken,” said the 37-year-old Bell. “I’ve brought embarrassment to my church and ministry.”
9. UPDATE #2: Applebee’s Facebook and Twitter are being flooded with angry comments.
11. UPDATE #3: The pastor’s Twitter and Facebook accounts have been pulled down after the story began to pick-up steam, but her page on The Black Preaching Network is full of irate users.

Arthur Morehill a month agoT.I.P. = To Insure Promptness. Originally, you pay, “t.i.p.” up front for better service. It’s best to “t.i.p.” before you even get your order in. Try it next time you go out and spend money on food. you’llbe amazed at the service you receive. Other meanings: To Insure Performance/To Improve Performance.

I don’t go to Applebee’s because I’ve never ever ever been to one where my food was right, the food was warm, where it didn’t take 20 minutes to ask what I wanted to drink or that the wait-staff owned up to their screw-ups rather than blaming it on “I’m new”.

* EDIT * sorry, meant to add that my regular was a pastor. Biggest douche I ever came in contact with. He also saw fit to mock the staff. I refused to serve him towards the end of my employment when he called one of my coworkers, who was gay, a “flaming fag” to his face and told him he was going to hell. Thankfully my employer stood by us and told the man if he didn’t respect the staff, they would ban him from the establishment. He complied, but I didn’t see him again in my remaining shifts and sincerely hope he never returned.

What’s saddest about this is that the server probably got over it in a matter of minutes—because it’s SO commonplace. As a server you just have to get over incidents like these. You lose your mind if you take each shitty customer’s comments to heart. Sundays are the worst day to work. Ever. Period. I made money on my Sunday shifts only by sheer volume—the enormous influx of people—not by tip amounts. It was nothing but stingy, self-righteous “Christians” who, as our manager used to say, “just got done being blessed and want to sit around judging us and drinking coffee.” If people had tipped accordingly every Sunday, I’d have made three times as much. The most annoying stunt was leaving a mini-Bible or pamphlet in lieu of an actual tip. First, they knew nothing about me (I was already a Christian, raised Catholic, and very devout—I couldn’t attend church because I had to work!); second, if I hadn’t been Christian, what makes you think stiffing me is going to make me want to join your religion? I did have some awesome church-going customers, don’t get me wrong. But as a whole, they’re the worst tippers and the absolute shittiest patrons. Btw- my worst customer ever was actually a regular (no idea why he’d keep requesting me if I was so terrible!) who ALWAYS ordered steak and lobster, our most expensive item; his family ordered similarly priced items, not to mention virgin daiquiris which they knew were not free refills. But lo and behold, EVERY week, for four years straight, they complained about their tab being so high, their steaks being cooked incorrectly (after they’d finished them, of course, and so incessantly the managers often comped them), and the restaurant being too loud, too crowded, etc. As if I had any ability to change those things. Bottom line? Some people are just dicks. Even if they left nice notes on my poor tip, it didn’t make up for it. Mini-bibles and compliments don’t pay rent.

Its bs! I was a waiter for a long time and i found that pastors are feckin cheap asses! Always would get stiffed on sundays when fhe churchy people xame in. Pissed me off.. And they always come in a nig party.. Never tipped.. Ans then she wants the whole resturant fired.. Lmao!!! Outageous! She even stiffs god with her measly 10% of 100% of life she can offer.. Cheap cheap xheap.. Plain and simple.

harleyq3 3 months agoirony of the situation, she still paid the gratuity. i say this because i have worked as a server. if you notice at the bottom where she put the total, she still put the same amount that had been calculated AFTER the gratuity. So she bitched about it, yet still paid it. she should have subtracted 6.29 instead of 28.64, so either way you look at it, the girl got her tip

mitchellb4 3 months agoYou really ought to aim for accuracy in your stories. The person who was fired was NOT the waitress, but a friend of hers who copied the receipt and posted it, with the customer’s name being visible. That’s a clear violation of any employer’s rules, and the firing was justified. The tipping problem is a separate issue.

davidl64 3 months agoThe restaurants are robbing both the server and the customer by requiring “tips”. Why call it that anymore? It is now “money owed”. The server works for the restaurant, not the customer, personally. They should be paid sufficiently for their jobs, instead of leaving up to be a personal money thing between the customer and employee. I personally am growing more and more indignant against corporations and franchises. My nephew just quit a job that was only paying him minimum wage to start with, but then also took $4 out of his paycheck for every day he worked for “lunch costs”. He didn’t want to eat the nasty restaurant food, so he’d bring his own. The money was taken anyway. Now that wasn’t much of a difference for the owner, but for my nephew, it was A LOT.

williamr18 3 months agoAs a christian, the pastor handled this all wrong. instead of getting this employee fired, he should have humbled himself for not thinking of the other persons situation over his own. The story would have ended better if he had just payed the servers even 10% of the check after the story broke, instead of losing his cool. Servers = Good Guys, Pastor = Douchebag.
