STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — Rick Santorum’s Super Tuesday rally in the eastern Ohio town of Steubenville drew a medium-sized crowd, including a group of Franciscan nuns from the neighboring town of Toronto.

Four sisters are in attendance tonight out of thirty in the order. All four have stickers on their habits indicating that they voted today. One, Sister Catherine Lynn, is Canadian but became an American citizen just to vote against President Obama this election cycle, she said.

She chose Santorum because of “his support of family values,” she said. “And with the mandate right now…” It’s not important to her that a Catholic be in office, she said, just that it not be Obama.

Sisters Maria Pio and Maria Claire only recently became Santorum supporters.

“We didn’t really know him before,” Sister Maria Pio said.

“We’re not particularly huge on tuning into news. We don’t really have access to television,” said Sister Maria Claire.

But both like Santorum for “how he views the dignity of life,” Maria Claire said. She’s also a fan of Santorum’s stances on the economy and job creation, noting that the sisters work with people in Steubenville who have become down and out since the collapse of the steel industry.

Sister Grace Anne is here at the party as well, but didn’t have time to discuss her political views.

“We have to hurry,” she said. “We’re praying.”
