Media, UN Battle One Man Blogger Rebellion

The U.N.’s maverick blogger finds himself at odds with his fellow reporters. “I’m not an insane person.”

I know, right? Now tell your friends!
Media, UN Battle One Man Blogger Rebellion

An independent journalist whose muckraking coverage of the U.N. earned him profiles in the New Yorker and the New York Times has become a source of tension among the U.N. press corps — though he says he’s been unfairly singled out by them because he refuses to conform.

On one side, traditional journalists at the UN have accused Matthew Lee of Inner City Press of making unwarranted attacks on them on his blog and to their employers, and along with U.N. officials, allege that he created a safety hazard with his very messy office.

On the other side, Lee says that his fellow reporters have colluded with officials to shut him out, even, in the case of Voice of America, asking the media accreditation office to review his credentials, and that they are part of the reason his office was searched without warning earlier this week.

“I very much feel/know they’re trying to silence me,” Lee said in an email.

Lee was one of the first bloggers ever given U.N. credentials. He’s known for his aggressive questioning of U.N. officials, and when he was first accredited, his mainstream media colleagues seemed to respect him. The president of the UN Correspondents Association said at the time, “I don’t see any difference in what he’s doing and what we are doing.”

But that has changed. With the recent search of his office by U.N. officials and ensuing drama, tensions are running high among the people who make a living of covering Turtle Bay — among whom Lee has become an outcast.

“I’m not an insane person,” Lee told BuzzFeed.

Members of the UN Correspondents Association say Lee has gone over their heads and written to their bosses complaining that they stole quotes from him, though the quotes came from a public press conference. They say he’s become obsessively antagonistic towards the UNCA, where he used to sit on the board, and which he now calls the “UN Censorship Alliance.” One member called Lee’s attitude towards the UNCA “insidious.” He has referred to other reporters as “lap dogs” on his blog, which prompted the parties involved to lodge a complaint against him.

Pamela Falk, a correspondent for CBS News and the president of UNCA, declined to comment for this story.

Lee says that his office at the U.N. was searched on March 18 without his consent and without any warning.

“A week after Reuters and AFP filed complaints against Inner City Press for having called them lapdogs of UN officials, and three days after the UN declined to provide a copy of the complaints, UN officials entered Inner City Press’ office at the UN without permission and took photographs,” Lee wrote on his blog. “When Inner City Press, notified by another member of the Free UN Coalition for Access, arrived on the scene, the officials were inside its office, going through papers. In the hallway, the president of the UN Correspondents Association, Pamela Falk of CBS, took cell phone photographs.”

The Free UN Coalition for Access is a rival group to the UNCA, started by Lee in December.

“There were people that were inside were literally going through my papers,” Lee said in an interview. “The head of media accreditation was there, as well as security officials.” Lee put a video on YouTube of the scene that he says he was asked to take down.

According to a U.N. spokesperson, Lee’s office was searched because it was very messy.

“On 18 March 2013, a staff member with the Department of Public Information’s Media Accreditation and Liaison Unit visited the office of Mr. Matthew Lee of Inner City Press to follow up with him on his question about the timing of the move-back date for the UN press corps to the Secretariat building,” said spokesman Martin Nesirky.

“On reaching the office, which was open, the DPI staff member met with the Vietnam News Agency correspondent, who shares the office space with Mr. Lee. The staff member observed that there was a large volume of trash in the office, prompting her to contact fire and security personnel owing to serious concerns over potential safety, health and fire hazards.”

“Mr. Lee subsequently disposed of the garbage that had accumulated in his part of the office,” Nesirky said.

Photos of Lee’s office were sent to BuzzFeed from an anonymous “Concerned UN Reporter” email account.

“Too bad you can’t get the smell on camera!” the reporter said. “It wasn’t a ‘press freedom’ ‘raid’ as Lee claims, but based on a genuine complaint.”

“He is complaining that his office was ‘raided,’ but everyone’s offices were checked. It’s U.N. property and no media pays rent.”

Lee played down the role of his office’s condition in the search.

“I won’t call it clean by any means but I don’t think it’s an emergency,” he said. “I have UN cleaning staff come into my office every night and they never do anything.”

The back-and-forth over the office searching incident comes after a period in which Lee and the other reporters have been increasingly unable to get along, partly because Lee has made the other reporters a main focus of his blog.

“Saying you’re a lapdog is not a crime,” Lee said of the complaint lodged against him.

Lee acknowledged that he spends much of his time writing about the other reporters at the UN these days.

“I wish it wasn’t that way but I feel very much under fire by them,” Lee said. “I decided that [my blog] was going to be 25% media critique.”

From Lee’s perspective, the other reporters resent him because he gets real dirt as opposed to pre-packaged leaks and quotes from press conferences.

“The reason I’ve had run-ins with them is that most journalism at the UN is going to a presser by Ban Ki-Moon and writing what he says,” Lee said. “It’s weird how the UN gets covered.”

And Lee thinks that his story speaks to a larger problem at the UN, one that would be familiar to those who cover the White House or presidential campaigns: the tight control of access, and how the powers-that-be decide who is a journalist and who is not.

“I’m not trying to have any rules set for journalists to be nice together,” Lee said. “The UN literally has no rules at all. Covering the UN is a pure privilege that can be recalled at any time.”

A spokesman for the UN didn’t immediately respond to a question about whether Lee will continue to be accredited at the UN. The NYCLU recently called on the UN to disclose its process for accrediting reporters after Voice of America asked the UN to review Lee’s credentials.

I had tried to post a comment on Mathhew Lee’s you tube video, ‘Behind UNCA “Press Freedom” Speech, Screeching Falk, Terror Tweets’. He does not publish the comment and nor does he respond to e mails.  It just confirms that he is not transparent and does not accept crtisism of his conduct.  I am posting my messages to him. ————— Forwarded message —————

Oh! The table’s seems to now turn-Makes Mr. Lee Squirm A dishonest man, this Mathhew Russell Lee.
He will write anything on anyone for a fee.
He calls his journal Inner City Press

Has put the spot light on him indeed
He blames the UNCA for his fate,

It really needs some serious disinfecting.
Does all the trash he accumulates,
Inspire the articles he creates? He is full of rubbish and empty talk
He is totally obsessed with Pamela Falk
His daily rants about her so out of order
He seems to have a serious psychotic disorder Hiding behind the second amendment,
Concealing his funding sources and secondments,
      A liar and a coward,
He even claimed he went to Harvard. He continues to maintain
      He is not really, “insane”
Everything he writes is vindictive and bad,

I love it that Lee’s tiny group of supporters have to dig up (literally) a dead man to praise him. Murray Kempton has been dead for more than 15 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Kempton Nice one!

Matthew Russell Lee is not ‘eccentric’ or just ‘odd’, I think he is mentally sick. All jobs ask candidates to produce a clean bill of physical and mental health, and perhaps this should be a requirement for being an accredited journalist. I have read the other comments posted and you cannot use the cover of ‘eccentricity’ to defend someone is a serial defamer of people’s reputations and caused insufferable pain to many hardworking and honest professionals through lies. There were legions of other bloggers and credible journalists that in the past thought protecting Matthew Lee stood for defending the freedom of speech. Now these same credible journalists are realizing he is a fraud and are formally requesting UN DPI to investigate him and to remove him. That says a lot about him about his credibility.
Now having seen images of his work place in this article I am struck by the garbage he writes and the garbage he physically accumulates. There seems a figurative co-relation. And then he says, he is not “insane”. Wow…
To be an accredited UN journalist, according to the UN website, you need an “official letterhead of a media organization, signed by the Publisher, Editor-in-Chief, or Assignment Editor.” This points to a minimum standard expected of a credible organization. I am really puzzled how someone like him who IS the ‘media organization’, IS the sole ‘Publisher’, ‘Editor-in-Chief’ and ‘writer’ i.e. micro-blogger was able to get accredited. Why not then all micro-bloggers get access to the UN? Will I get accredited to the UN if I set up my own blog site and start writing trash about the UN? Where is the journalist integrity, when there is no fact-checking done? What kind of journalist is he, when there is no space to add comments to refute his claims?

Standup for a noble cause even if it is for UNCA! I respect that! I TRULY RESPECT THAT! But doing so anonymously is like that famous phrase: “YOU ALMOST GOT ME PREGNANT” ALMOST do not count. You Know That!!

Any so-called journalist or media entity (Lee’s is a public “charity”) who doesn’t disclose his/her funding sources is suspicious. Lee should disclose all his funding sources so the world can judge whether or not he really is independent. Many suspect he’s really not independent. Look closely at which issues and countries he never writes about and which sides he has taken on certain issues. When you do that, it becomes pretty clear who could be supporting him…

    • MurrayKempton a month ago

Mr. Lee may be eccentric, obsessive, and sometimes even petty and vindictive. He is a terrible slob. But he is also a very good reporter. He has exposed a lot of wrong doing and championed the plight of those suffering horribly as the UN member states and the organization have failed to act. He has broken more stories than the Turtle Bay reporters for the world’s leading news organizations. And so many UN reporters are complete tools (a large number work for government controlled media or publications controlled by odious oligarchs). So who are they to challenge his accreditation? I have no doubt the great Murray Kempton, who reported often from the UN back in the day, would think highly of Mr. Lee.

      • Davidknutsen a month ago

Mathhew Russell lee of Inner City Press is a liar. Take for example he had written in his wikipedia site that he attended Harvard university. When he was challenged he quickly took it down. Perhaps this may have been the lies and chicanary he used to get accredited in the first place. He is a lousy reporter and uses his website to smear people’s reputation. It took a long time for the correspondents at the UN to realize his skullduggery and obfuscation. They use him as a ‘sniffer dog’ to get confidential information about people and operations in the UN. He should be thrown out of the UN premises. After seeing the pictures of his office he is a health hazard to people around him.

      • Chocorama a month ago

To the “great” Murray Kempton:  1) Yes, many reporters in the UN press corps are not serious journalists. But there are a dozen or so excellent reporters and Lee is NOT one of them. He’s the worst thing to hit the UN press corps since bed bugs. 2) Your assertion that “He has broken more stories than the Turtle Bay reporters for the world’s leading news organizations” is false and based on a myth that Lee himself is propogating. He broke a few minor things years ago but the big UN news is broken by the Washington Post, NYT and some of the wires and it’s been that way for years. Just do a little research and don’t use ICP as your source when looking to see what news he’s broken.  3) Lee is a lousy reporter who is driven not by a desire to report the truth - as is the case with good journalists - but to get revenge on anyone who criticizes him. He claims to be for free speech but seeks to silence and intimidate anyone who calls him out on his lies and distortions. He’s a hypocrite. 4) He’s a health hazard as this Buzzfeed article illustrates nicely.

The “great” Murray Kempton is actually the LATE Murray Kempton. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murray_Kempton Was it Lee or his attack dog/smitten groupie who contacted the dead Murray Kempton to get this comment? And was it via seance or some other supernatural mode of communication? I suppose it came via the same channel that Lee’s pseudo “scoops” come from!

The United Nations are an enormous and most complex organization, run by human beings encumbered by political realities. Human beings make mistakes. Every day is a difficult one at the UN. The whistle blower function of investigative journalism is almost a necessity in an organization of the size of the UN. While the big media journalists may have become indolent in their (deemed) safe jobs, everybody else is a struggler. And that produces the interesting insights and questions. Both UNCA and FUNCA have a right to exist ’ side by side in peace and security ‘. I was told, that there are approximately 2000 accredited journalists at the UN. There is no reason why 200 of them, who pay a small nominal fee to their ‘club’, should have privileges over all others. UNCA has been badly mismanaged for far too long, the results become apparent now. The skirmish about the ‘right’ of the first question, the pissant branding of each and every press conference with ‘on behalf of’ have exceeded tolerable levels.. They became a circus and a complete farce. It is up to the UN to tell both parties to stop this..UNCA and FUNCA can hold their events and fight their fights outside the UN. One can question the needfulness of SG Ban Ki-moon’s travel to San Marino, Andorra and Monaco. But maybe he thinks small is beautiful. It can be. But first Lee has to clean up his office and his reputation if he wants to attract new members.

UNCA is an organization that has existed for more than 60 years, with almost 200 paying members.
It is true that not all UNCA members are FUNCA, but ALL FUNCA members are UNCA. UNCA how many of your members trust you? (Please don’t lie)
UNCA do you know why they pay you that $ 70? (No! is not for the book) Yes! For Protection!
UNCA, do you know how many of your people are fed-up with your 2-years fight?
Everyone! Everyone is so fed-up with you dragging all of us down the mud with your ‘Big Media’ friends and old-fashioned ideas. We are so fed up that we decided to create our own Group to protect us and to get more access; this group is called the Free UN Coalition for Access (FUNCA). Yes UNCA, we have more than 3 members and no, you don’t need to know how many. We protect our members. The only things we want from our members are their complaints so we can send to the appropriated agency at the United Nations, and their support to reform DPI Media rules (or lack thereof). Yes we are doing your job! Yes UNCA, I was a member of your board! I know how you operate and that’s why I resigned when you ask me to help you expel an accredited journalist because the UN was not happy with his writing! 60-years old organization!!! Please!! All the good that UNCA has done has already disappeared under Jon Paulo’s dictatorship. UNCA, you may call us “Crazy”, “Dirty Peoples”, “Misfits”, “Not-Journalists”, “Smells Bad”, “Bloggers”, “Piss ants”, “New Media Freaks”, or any other name, but FUNCA is gaining more and more of your members every day. UNCA, you must be really concerned and feeling the pressure from your members if you are so worried about FUNCA.
Let see how many of your ‘Big Media’ bosses will come to your aid when push comes to shove. Remember there are more ‘Small Media’ than ‘Big Media’ at the UN, and we demand equitable access and opportunities. The “Crazy”, “Dirty Peoples”, “Misfits”, “Not-Journalists”, “Smells Bad”, “Bloggers”, “Piss ants”, “New Media Freaks”, are here, and we are here to stay! The time of the UN Press Corp to be afraid of ‘Big Media’ and UNCA Retaliations is over! The Free UN Coalition for Access (FUNCA) is here!
REFORM! or get out of the way of free access and honest journalism.

Matthew Russell Lee represents the moral decay of journalism, and is a pathological muckraker, who feeds off information provided by disgruntled staff of the UN and lives off handouts provided by nefarious sources. We hear of some illegal outfits funding his one man crusade to damage people’s reputation. Where is the space on his blog site to issue a rebuttal-this puts a question mark on his credibility and his propensity to spread falsehoods and using the second amendment to duck for cover. Why does he not reveal his funding sources? When a man says he is not “insane” one wonders after looking at images of his office whether these were images of a lunatic asylum where the staff have taken a long holiday and no one is managing the patients. Who is Matthew Lee’s editor after all? Why has she/he taken such a long holiday? How can a blog that has no checks and balances allowed to be accredited to the UN. Clearly the UN has its own share of morons who oversee the accreditation process. I just checked out some of his blogs and his incessant attack on the UN spreading cholera in Haiti. If there is a cholera outbreak in the UN in New York we know who to blame.

Inner City Press is a registered charity and Matthew Russell Lee refuses to reveal where his funding comes from. This raises questions about potential conflicts of interest. He should not be accredited as a U.N. journalist. The U.N. Department of Public Information says on the accreditation website that it “must be satisfied that the individuals applying for accreditation are bona fide media professionals and represent bona fide media organizations [formally registered as a media organization in a country recognized by the United Nations General Assembly] … Media accreditation is not accorded to the information outlets of non-governmental organizations.”

Complaints have been made against him for his menacing and threatening behavior that has left many journalists at the United Nations in worried about their safety. Many also view him as a cyber bully. His “media critique” involves personal online attacks against other journalists, who are unable to defend themselves as Lee does not allow comments to be made on his blog. His stories are not edited by anyone. When he is scooped by other journalists, which happens regularly, he throws what can only be described as an online tantrum. I believe Lee’s journalism ethics and standards leave much to be desired.

UNCA is a more than 60 year old organization with almost 200 paying members. Lee’s “FUNCA” consists of three, maybe four, members. There is absolutely no comparison between the two.

The state of Lee’s office was described by U.N. officials as a health, safety and fire hazard. You only have to look at those photos. For him to blame the U.N. cleaners for his mess is just despicable.

I just looked at Lee’s website and 8 of the last 10 headlines are attacks on other journalists at the UN. That’s 80%, not 25% “media critique”. And Lee’s “media critique” looks to me like it’s little more than an obsession with damaging the reputations of other members of the UN press corps with distortions, insinuations and/or erroneous allegations. And it’s disheartening to see people once again referring to him as a “journalist”. One of his new posts actually suggests UNCA is to blame for his filthy office. Incredible. Another interesting statistic. If you do a google search, you can find hundreds of attacks by Lee on other journalists and only one article on the UN Post website critical of him. So who’s doing the attacking here? Lee’s not the victim. In my view, it’s hardly surprising that VOA and others don’t want the guy around. He’s been attacking fellow reporters for two years with unfounded allegations of the kind that no real journalist could get past an editor (he has no editor). He screams at people in public at the UN in a way that no institution should tolerate. But typical of the UN, Lee got reaccredited — a point he doesn’t like to raise on his website, maybe because it would undermine his fantasy of persecution. Lee’s not a hero or underdog or anything positive. He doesn’t even break news anymore, apparently because no one wants to talk to him. He keeps talking about his reporting from NY on the Sri Lanka war against the Tamil Tigers. But that ended 4 years ago!
