Gay Republicans Attack Obama For Announcing Same-Sex Marriage Support
“Cold comfort,” say two leading gay Republican groups. Their position looks increasingly precarious.
Two prominent gay Republican groups blasted President Obama for announcing his support of gay marriage today, criticizing him for the news’ proximity to the passing of a gay marriage ban in North Carolina.
“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said Log Cabin Republicans president R. Clarke Cooper in a statement sent out to reporters. “Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue, but LGBT Americans are right to be angry that this calculated announcement comes too late to be of any use to the people of North Carolina, or any of the other states that have addressed this issue on his watch.”
“This administration has manipulated LGBT families for political gain as much as anybody, and after his campaign’s ridiculous contortions to deny support for marriage equality this week he does not deserve praise for an announcement that comes a day late and a dollar short,” the statement continues.
GOProud head Christopher Barron sent out a similar statement, saying “It is good to see that after intense political pressure that President Obama has finally come around to the Dick Cheney position on marriage equality. I am sure, however, the President’s newly discovered support for marriage is cold comfort to the gay couples in North Carolina.”
The release continued, “This is hardly a profile in courage by President Obama. For years now, President Obama has tried his hardest to have it both ways on this issue.”

Jacob a year agoIt bums me out that theres still so much blind faith in Obama even though he’s literally done nothing to deserve re-election in 2012. Sure, Romney is a prick but can Obeezy’s platform for the next election really be “Not As Bad As Romney, Maybe?”. Consider that Obama’s stance on gay marriage is fundamentally rhetorical and holds absolutely no weight. Ladies and gentleman.. (bear with me) understand he’s coming out and spitting some empty words about him being pro-gay marriage so maybe you’ll vote for him again. I say we call his bluff. Light a fire under his ass until he lays out a concrete plan, fuck even a blueprint for what he’s actually going to do about gay marriage. Talk is cheap and I’m frankly livid at the gall of Obama coming out and saying this now when he has nothing to lose… AND it’s too late for the people of NC.

kk5748 a year agoNot that Obama’s competition for the election is strong or anything, but more than anything, this is just a PR move meant to bolster up more support for his re-election campaign and remind people why they voted for him in the first place. I’m glad he’s finally publicly saying he supports this, but as NC showed us yesterday, it’s ultimately up to the states anyway. I don’t think him announcing this is going to change anyone’s stance on gay marriage.

Jacob a year agoRepublican thought is not a set in stone political ideology, nor is it a homogenous set of values shared by all Republicans. Logically, it is entirely plausible, indeed admirable, of LGBT Americans to stand by their political beliefs rather than sacrifice their vote, and in their minds the well-being of a country, to a single issue. Furthermore, they are entirely within their rights to point out that President Obama has made a political game of LGBT support, employing it as a rhetorical tool to appease his liberal base on one hand while failing to take a disciplined stance in favor of LGBT rights in order to appeal to independents on the other. This comes down to whether or not you believe LGBT rights (that is, people’s lives) should be made into a political farce or not. Dismissing their opinion because they happen to be gay and - *gasp* - Republican simply lays bare your collective ignorance for all to see.

Villain a year agoIt must suck to belong to a party that will never elect you for a national position… And I could be wrong, but I don’t think any openly gay republican has even been elected to a state position, most come out years after winning or leaving office. Statistics have to play in favor, that there are a few closeted in congress now…

Benjamin Sapiens a year agoHonestly, an Obama endorsement of SSM before yesterday probably would have done nothing but made gay marriage even more unpopular among right-leaning voters because of it’s association with the “socialist Kenyan in the White House.” His critics would have accused him of trying to squash states’ rights, just like they accused him of trying to overstep the system of checks and balances when he warned the Supreme Court to remain fair and impartial when considering Obamacare’s individual mandate recently. He had to pick the most politically expedient time to make his announcement, and he chose today as that time.

The Angry Luddite a year agoI don’t know, I thought it was a bold move considering the timing. With Romney officially announcing his stance opposing gay marriage, and the crushing blow of North Carolina’s Amendment One, I think this is a much needed flare of hope. I don’t think Obama announcing this before the vote would have done much to change the results, either. It seems pretty clear that the people voting for Amendment One weren’t on the fence about their choice.
