Civilian Shoots And Kills Sailor At Virginia Navy Base

Navy security forces killed the suspect on the scene.

A civilian shot and killed a sailor Monday night at a Navy base in Norfolk, Va., the Associated Press reported.

The civilian, who was authorized to enter the base, was unarmed when he accessed the facility, according to reports. He disarmed a petty officer aboard the USS Mahan, a guided missile destroyer, and used the gun to shoot the sailor at about 11:20 p.m, base spokeswoman Terri Davis said Tuesday.

Navy security forces killed the suspect on the scene. The names of both of the dead have not been released pending notification to their families.

The naval base, which is the largest in the world, was briefly on lockdown. Operations had returned to normal by early Tuesday.

The incident is the second deadly shooting at a Navy facility in less than a year. Last September, a former Navy reservist shot and killed 12 civilian workers at the Washington Navy Yard.
