Republican Congressman Slams Romney On Immigration
Romney has kept Rep. David Rivera at a distance over financial questions. “I’m not willing to participate in any Hispanic outreach efforts without seeing more details on a permanent solution for these kids,” Rivera tells BuzzFeed.
A prominent Hispanic Republican and Miami power broker accused Mitt Romney of lacking leadership and compassion in his approach to immigration in an interview with BuzzFeed this week, and warned that elements of the Miami party machinery won’t engage on election day without a more expansive Romney plan on immigration.
Rep. David Rivera, who represents the southwestern tip of the Sunshine State, is the only Latino Republican in the House who’s not on Romney’s Hispanic Steering Committee, kept at arm’s length by the presidential candidate because of a set of investigations into his personal finances. He recently introduced legislation that would give amnesty to some immigrants who came to to the country as children. And he said he has yet to see a serious, satisfying proposal from Romney on the issue.
“I think Hispanic voters expect more details as to what that ‘permanent solution’ might be that he keeps talking about,” Rivera said, referring to Romney’s pledge to fix the immigration system while in office.
In the telephone interview, Rivera rejected the notion that Romney can largely bypass the issue by focusing on Latinos’ high unemployment rate, as has apparently been the campaign’s strategy.
“The economy is the number one issue for every voter,” Rivera said. “But there are issues that are important to different voters other than the economy. For Evangelicals, pro-life issues are important. For gun owners, gun rights are very important.”
He added, “Gov. Romney has taken positions on issues other than the economy. Immigration shouldn’t be an exception. I think he could show more leadership on the issue by unveiling a specific proposal.”
Rivera chalked up Romney’s failure to articulate a comprehensive immigration plan to fear of the tough politics.
“I think they’re probably worried about wading into a quagmire where whatever he does he will be criticized from the right, and have it not be satisfactory to those for whom the issue matters,” he said. “So they may not want to wade into that debate. But that’s what presidential campaigns are for. To put out your proposals and let voters judge them on their merits.”
Elected to the House in 2010, Rivera has been a fixture in local Florida politics for the past decade. But he’s also spent recent years battling investigations into his personal finances and disclosure of income from his time as a state legislator. Most recently, The Miami Herald reported that the FBI and IRS are probing payments from a dog track operator.
The investigations have prompted national Republicans, including Romney, to keep their distance from the South Florida congressman, and explain why he’s the only Hispanic Republican in the House who isn’t tied to the Romney campaign. But Rivera has denied even being contacted by federal authorities, and his defenders have included Senator Marco Rubio.
“One of things that’s startled me is that only in Washington are people expected to turn their backs on friends when things may not be going well for them,” Rubio told Politico after holding a recent fundraiser for Rivera. “That’s certainly not the way I want to operate.”
Rivera’s place in the national party, meanwhile, isn’t just symbolic. He’s a big wheel in Miami’s Republican machine, a long-time leader of its conservative Cuban community. (In the primaries, he ran Newt Gingrich’s campaign, and reportedly helped produce an ad labeling Romney “anti-immigrant.”) He represents a crucial district in a crucial swing state, and Romney will need strong Cuban-American support to carry Florida.
Asked whether he would rally that community to turn out for Romney on election day, Rivera said he was committed to defeating President Obama. But he added that as long as Romney’s immigration position remains hazy, he would refuse to act as an official surrogate to Hispanic voters.
“I’m not willing to participate in any Hispanic outreach efforts without seeing more details on a permanent solution for these kids,” he said.
He said Obama is winning the fight for Hispanic voters because Romney hasn’t given his Latino supporters anything to work with.
“Right now, his Hispanic supporters and Hispanic surrogates don’t have the ammunition to combat the Obama attacks on him,” Rivera said.
And while he said immigration isn’t necessarily a pressing concern for the large Cuban-American population in his district, Romney is at risk of alienating even conservative Hispanic citizens by signaling apathy for the community’s plight.
“It goes to what I will call the compassion factor,” Rivera said. “Cuban-Americans would like to see a level of compassion in their next president exhibited toward Hispanic kids in the Southwestern United States. They’re very sympathetic to the plight of these kids, and it will certainly be on their radar screen the approach the candidates take. I think Gov. Romney would serve himself well to take a more specific position.”

Overcomer98 10 months agoNO, dpandolfo86, Obama’s policy change was not about finding a solution for the immigration problem. It was about getting more votes for the November elections. Obama would get more votes by granting amnesty to the more than 1 million illegal immigrants under age 30 and giving them work permits! Then Obama would get their votes and the votes of greedy business owners who would rather hire cheap labor than unemployed American citizens at higher wages! The solution to illegal immigration is staring Obama in the face … . . it’s called DEPORTATION, a law that’s been around forever, it’s just not being enforced! It’s a shame, but Obama would rather get votes by granting amnesty to law breaking, illegal immigrants than enforce immigration laws, which would make jobs available to unemployed American citizens. He’s not honorable like that!

Overcomer98 10 months agoRep David Rivera, the traitor needs to show compassion for the 20 million unemployed Americans and their kids? Instead of straddling the fence he should go ahead and join the Democratic Party. He’s a disgrace to the Republican Party. All illegal immigrants should be deported if they aren’t going to study and learn the English language to become an American citizen. America has enough people who break our laws and people who think America owes them hand-outs on a silver platter. Although the Supreme Court saved the day, Obama should be impeached for side-steppng Congress to give amnesty to the illegal alien kids under age 30.

Benjamin Sapiens 10 months agoI honestly think the best solution to the illegal immigration issue is to strip American citizenship from people like the scumbags who have commented on this article and give it to undocumented immigrants. For example, Richard M. Swier and Janice Manz, two anti-immigration shitstains whose comments can be seen above in the ‘Facebook Conversations,’ would have their American citizenships taken from them and given to some theoretical 28-year-old girl in Arizona who’s lived in America since she was two. Richard and Janice and the rest of their ilk would then be deported to Newt Gingrich’s moon colony.

BossaNova 10 months agoToo many people forget the other half of the argument. Employment is ONE problem; the other is the BACKSTAB against LEGAL immigrant applicants who must wait TEN YEARS to get here, like my step-daughter in China, who can’t come until 2019, and is not able to sneak in, and does not want to. Giving amnesty is also RACIST against all non-hispanics, as most of the invaders happen to be of that ethnicity. Amnesty sucks!

jayrossz 10 months agoThis is a two-country problem that can only be solved by the cooperation of both countries. We need to have serious discussions with Mexico and it is my belief that soon after the citizens of the United States elect an effective and responsible President and administration, a protocol should be established and joint meetings and negotiations between the two nations to resolve this problem should be carried out.

jayrossz 10 months agoWe need to have serious discussions with the Government of Mexico. This is a two-country problem that should be solved by the cooperative efforts of both countries. I cannot offer any solutions, but I strongly believe that once the citizens of the U.S. elect a proper and effective President and administration, priority should be given to establishing a protocol and constructive meetings with representatives from both countries.

anitar6 10 months agoI could be mistaken, but I believe that I learned in history that when people came thru Ellis Island, their children were included with them, so how is it just to allow them to be separate from their parents, who broke our law? William10 is right, this guy supposedly works for American citizens, and his first job should be in their defense.
Personally, illegal aliens have only caused my family grief and suffering. -

bobg10 10 months agoRep. Rivera: Pay close attention to a very respected Hispanic: “Every sovereign nation has the authority to determine who can be a citizen and who can be present within its borders. As the nation’s former chief law enforcement officer, and a citizen who believes in the rule of law, I cannot condone anyone coming into this country illegally. We are a nation of laws. When people fail to follow the law with impunity, it encourages further disobedience and breeds disrespect for the rule of law; and that is not America.” — Alberto Gonzales, the nation’s 80th Attorney General, speech to the Austin (TX) Economics Club. Article 4, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution states: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence. The feds have gone so far as to sue states that have tried to protect the public health and safety of their citizens. The entity that has a constitutional MANDATE to “provide for the common defense” (e.g., securing our border against a foreign invasion) has essentially refused to fulfill those duties. The millions of illegal aliens currently in the country definitely constitute an “invasion;” and, violent crimes, theft and the fraudulent consumption of welfare, medical and educational services by them certainly meets my definition of serious domestic and economic violence being perpetrated against American citizens. I’m sorry, but how many years have these under 30s had to apply for citizenship, but didn’t bother to do so? There’s a right way and a wrong way to “Come to America,” so I don’t have a lot of sympathy for those who chose not to “ring the doorbell,” but instead slipped in through an open back window.

jonc13 10 months agoThis is misplaced compassion which = injustice. The real compassion should be on the 20,000,000 American workers who legally built this great country and are now competing against those who could have become legal but chose not to. Compassion should go to the citizen first and this does not seem like a case where compassion trumps the rule of law.
