Obama Supporter Suggests Anti-Mormon Whisper Campaign
“I’m thinking that even though we don’t LIKE campaigns to get nasty, we in the south (TN) come to EXPECT it,” a “team member” writes on the campaign Dashboard. The campaign removes the post after an inquiry.
When the Obama campaign released its much-anticipated Dashboard platform last May, it was touted as a potentially revolutionary organizing tool that would connect supporters, and merge online activism with real-life grassroots campaigning.
It can also be used as a platform to launch whispering campaigns, as one user proved this week.
On Monday, a “team member” named Laurence De Palma, who lists his location as East Nashville, presented volunteers with some talking points to convince Southern Christian voters they shouldn’t vote for a Mormon. The message was available under “Resources” and tagged “persuasion.”
“I’m thinking that even though we don’t LIKE campaigns to get nasty, we in the south (TN) come to EXPECT it,” De Palma began. “What we also know is that we have a very ‘rigid’ view of Christianity, and apparently, Mormonism isn’t anywhere in our views. This could easily win TN/SC/AL/GA, etc.”
The post goes on to include brief, oversimplified summaries of Mormon doctrines, framed to clash with evangelical Christianity.
An Obama campaign aide, speaking on background, said the site is governed by a moderation policy that allows users to flag posts that are offensive or inappropriate, after which campaign moderators delete them. De Palma’s Mormon post had been up for four days, and had not been flagged. When BuzzFeed asked the campaign for a response, the post was immediately removed.
President Obama’s advisers have consistently pledged not to make Romney’s religion part of the campaign, directly or through veiled innuendo.
But Chicago has little control over what messages its grassroots volunteers decide to spread — something the Romney campaign has learned for itself.
UPDATE: Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul condemned the posting in an emailed statement: “The news concerning the Obama Campaign’s dashboard containing language based on sowing religious division is deeply disturbing. There is no place in politics for this, and it must be addressed and put to an end.”

kcc3 8 months agoObama is a MUSLIM, figure it out, not interested in assisting Israel, but wants to be friends with the MUSLIM nations.
What I cannot understand, why no one brings this up, its pretty simple he is a MUSLIM, and keep away from the important things when dealing with the MUSLIM nations, People wake up we do not want this man back in the White House -

Tabitha Taylor 8 months ago@bartm - The mormons don’t have a theocracy based on violent jihad in which you are to take over every nation globally until everyone can live under sharia law.. Which by the way is the most bloody, brutal anti - freedom, anti- woman type of existence anyone has ever seen. In fact it was the Muslim Brotherhood who set up Hitler’s concentration camps.. So please, spare us the comparison. Mormon’s may not be a mainstream doctrine, but at least they aren’t exterminating the Christians in the middle east, crucifying them naked to trees like your buddy Obama’s dictators are…And they also aren’t admitted enemies to democracy & freedom. moron

Wayne Capurro 8 months agoAlthough De Palma’s posting is accurate with respect to Mormon philosophy, there is nothing clear, definite or obvious in any of his conclusions. And Ms Saul need not get her panties in such a twist because someone wants to bring up a candidates religion. Both Obama’s and Romney’s religious beliefs (which both claim to hold so dear and for which both ascribe such personal importance) are, and should be, fair game. They’re running for President of the United States for crying out loud!!! It may not be politically correct to discuss their religions, but it’s down right stupid not to. One of these men is going to bring their dearly held and uber important beliefs into the White House. As informed voters, we should have some idea what that means.

lindadawsonf 8 months agoMormons are good, hard-working, friendly caring family-oriented people, don’t smoke, drink, take drugs, drink coffee, are the biggest givers to charity, etc.
But, their CHURCH, the biggest influence in their lives, the source of the standards to which they live up to, was founded by a CON MAN?? Is evil, stupid, ridiculous, weird, crazy etc.????
Is there something WRONG with this picture? -

whistledog 8 months agoJoseph Smith was a convicted con man before he allegedly found the gold tablets he never showed to anyone else. It’s basically the Scientology of the 19th century. I think the Mormon faith is generally a good influence, Mormons are some of the kindest people I have ever met, but what they believe is completely ridiculous and there is no reason any voter should not take that into consideration.

MasterCoPe 8 months agoWow. There’s a lot of half truths I’m there that show whoever came up with those statements knows nothing of the LDS faith. Though I find it humorous that anti-mormons really don’t know what they’re talking about but they assume they’re scholars.

calmnows 8 months agoAnd YET AGAIN we see the wonderful tolerance of the Left. You guys provide the best evidence ever that we need to get rid of the dictator-wannabe in November. It is so time for Obama to go. The gods alone know why enough people were fooled into voting for him the first time.

pfw 8 months agoI’ll take a nutcase Mormon who has had a real job, knows who to balance a budget, and lovers America over a Socialist/Communist that has never had real job, past scooping out ice cream, isn’t qualified to operate a lemonade stand, is bankrupting the USA, and who has a disdain for America.

willh10 8 months agoWhat does religion have to do with politics? The liberals have been screaming about separation of Church and State for years, removing crosses, references to God, etc. from public buildings, logos, and so on. So the separation of Church and state only fits in where the liberals want it to. When it comes to election time, suddenly we’re not supposed to vote for someone whose religious views don’t agree with ours? Typical liberal hypocritical BS. Last election, the American sheeple elected a Muslim. Now they want to pitch a fit over a Mormon? Most of what that person said about Mormonism is over-simplified and skewed anyway so it holds no validity. I’m Mormon but that’s not why I’m voting for Romney. If he was the same person but any other religion, I’d still vote for him because of his conservative values. Obama has done more damage in so many ways than any other president. We’re going to be fixing this mess for decades and that’s providing some other similar idiot doesn’t get elected any time soon.
