Bloomberg Report Takes Aim At Mormon Church For Online Gun Sales

“One would think that a church would feel a special obligation to make sure that they weren’t fueling a black market for a particularly deadly form of commerce,” a source involved in the report says.

The Mormon Church owns one of the most active and unregulated gun sale portals on the web, according to a national investigation released by the New York City Mayor’s office.

The website in question is KSL.com, the online hub for Utah’s NBC affiliate and sister radio station, which are both owned and operated by the for-profit arm of the Mormon Church. In addition to local news, KSL.com produces a popular classifieds section that reaches millions of users well beyond Utah.

The LDS connection drew little notice when Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a leading financier of the gun control movement, published the report in December, but an official involved with Bloomberg’s investigation is calling out the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for putting “profits over principle.”

“A church, like any other organization, has the right to raise money,” said the person, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for the mayor. “But one would think that a church would feel a special obligation to make sure that they weren’t fueling a black market for a particularly deadly form of commerce.”

According to the Bloomberg report, KSL.com had the third-most active gun listings of any site on the web during a 100-day period last year (2,713), coming in behind only large specialty firearm sites Gunlistings.org, and Armslist.com, and beating out even Craigslist.

But the real problem isn’t the volume, the report’s authors say; it’s the unregulated nature of KSL.com. While other classifieds sites require users to deal only on their sites with registered and confirmed accounts, KSL makes it easy for buyers and sellers to deal behind closed doors.

From the report:

[On KSL.com] sellers frequently list their contact email and phone number, which are openly displayed on the ad. This feature makes it easy for buyers to contact sellers and arrange to buy a firearm without identifying themselves – a feature that is particularly attractive to unscrupulous purchasers who do not want their purchases detected or recorded. And the website allows visitors to search for items being sold by private individuals who, in contrast to licensed dealers, are not required to conduct background checks.

Brett Atkinson, general manager of the site, insisted that KSL is a “responsible corporate citizen” that cooperates with law enforcement, and “frequently reviews its policies and procedures.”

But its own internal reviews have yielded little change in its approach to gun ads—even as local police have raised concerns.

According to an article published last March in the Deseret News, which is also owned by the Mormon church, KSL considered eliminating the firearm category from its site altogether, under pressure from state law enforcement. Ultimately, though, it decided to keep the gun ads, opting only to post a guide to gun sale laws more prominently on its homepage.

“The responsibility for the transaction is that of the parties involved,” Atkinson said. “This is just like any other transaction, a vehicle, a lawnmower, a bicycle.”

But the person involved with the Bloomberg investigation said KSL and the Mormon church should set a higher bar for gun ads.

“The fact that they have looked into this makes it clear that they understand they have a problem, he said. “If they have essentially decided to press on without taking effective action, it seems they’ve made a choice to put profits over principle.”

He continued: “If you’re going to [facilitate sales] for something deadly, you have an obligation to make sure it’s done legally and appropriately,” the person said. “Just throwing up your hands and saying, ‘We’re not willing to give up this profit center’ is unacceptable, and particularly so when it comes from a religious organization.”

UPDATE: Mark Glaze, Director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns—which is co-chaired by Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino—reached out to BuzzFeed to push back against the notion that the Mormon Church was being singled out.

“Just like Craigslist and every other site, if [KSL is] allowing gun sales, they have a responsibility to make sure they’re not an entry point for buyers trying to avoid a background check,” Glaze said. “There are simple steps that can screen out bad actors, and many sites are already using them.”

Bloomberg and all anti-gunners are traitors to our country. They should be deported to a Communist country where they belong! The government wants to take away our guns to control us? To turn us into a Communist country? To make it easier for us to be taken over by a Communist country? To have “Royals and Peasants?” Pick one or add to the list. Our Founding Fathers fought the Revolutionary War for our freedoms, and it was they who wrote the Second Amendment so that the American people can bear arms and keep this country free from tryrants like Bloomberg and all of his anti-gunner cronies. Who are the idiots that keep voting for these traitors?

I live in Utah and love KSL.com. I have both purchased and sold guns on KSL and have never seen an add or been contacted by anyone outside of Utah/Idaho and thus do not know Why Bloomberg is so concerned about a site on the other side of the country. I can see where there may be dangers, but fail to see how this is any different than a gun show, or craigslist. I have been very careful and won’t sell to anyone who does not have a Utah concealed/carry permit but would be very interested to know if there are any statistics regarding crimes committed from guns purchased on KSL.

The key word in the phrase “private sales”:s “private”. Words mean things. “…you have an obligation to make sure it’s done legally and appropriately[.]” It IS being done legally, else it would be shut down by the authorities. “Appropriate” is entirely subjective, and opinions are like noses - everybody’s got one, and they all smell. You are entitled to yours. I am entitled to tell you to shut up.

This article is very misleading. KSL.com does not make any money at all from their listings of guns, bicycles or anything else. It is a free service. It is a great service. Somebody needs to do their friggin homework before spouting off and misleading readers.

59 years of Mormonism speaking here: If there is anything I learned about LDS Inc. and its lesser affiliate Mormon & Co. is that it will do anything for buck. It turns out it is only a real estate investment and development firm behind the rather weak guise of a church. It has rebuilt most of downtown Salt Lake City at its own expense and may be reeling from the cost overruns now well into $3 billion. Whatever the case, they have given a whole new meaning to “income diversity.”

“Mormons” are already used to slander and hate. But the war on religion is really ratcheting up. We’ve got a 2-fer this week. First the Catholics and now the LDS Church.  Evangelicals and Protestants… don’t think your time is not coming. Elect a Conservative Republican who will stand for the freedoms of the people. (My guy is Romney, but if you choose Santorum or Ron Paul, so be it. Romney will actually get things done in DC.)

I am not sure how public websites that offer guns for sale constitutes a “black market” Black market is defined as  •The illegal business of buying or selling goods or currency in violation of restrictions such as price controls or rationing.
•A place where these illegal operations are carried on. Nothing illegal is going on here. Just patriotic commerce in support of our beloved 2nd Amendment.

I went to this site & viewed the section, I then went to the post an ad to this section. There is nothing any different from Craigs List or any of the other sites used for posting a product. Bloomberg is just starting a “witch hunt” on the Mormon’s he should be ashamed & he should be besmurched!

Bloomberg was a lifelong Democrat who ran as a Repunblican to avoid running in Dem primary against Green. SO he ran as a Republican and won anyway. Now he is an independent in name only. But the city had a term limits requiriement they lifted for Bloomberg. That must be restored as soon as he is out, or enforced! His unchecked power should not be taken as inevitiable.

Hey I didn’t know about KSL.com - thanks for the heads-up! Nothing like the mayor of the largest city in the U.S. being all for violating the first 2 amendments of the Constitution!!!

How much longer does he have in office?

Mayor Blumeberg is a New World Order Totalitarian Stooge. He has never seen a freedom that he does not want to regulate or abolish. People of New York wise up and vote him out of office. Perhaps he has never read the Constitution, either that or chooses to ignore it. This is why Republics will continue to loose, they have become Democrat lites, in this case a Democrat with an R after his name.

Is the church actually making money off these online classified ads? Most of the media website ads I’ve seen are free. Unless you count the general ad space on the website.  They aren’t making money off of gun sales, they’re just making it possible for their readers/viewers to buy guns without telling the government where to look when they decide it’s time to confiscate the guns from the peasants.

Remember, it was Bloomberg who was earlier last year, trying to tell Arizona how to handle it’s issues regarding firearms. He nees to take care of what is happening in his own front yard, before worrying about someone else’s back yard!
