Noted Mormon-mocker and Obama donor Bill Maher Tweeted this Monday afternoon:

Why even listen to #MittRomney on foreign policy? His entire FP experience is 2 yrs trying to brow-beat Frenchmen into joining his cult

It’s not the first time Maher — the liberal comedian who donated one million dollars to President Obama’s re-election effort — has attacked Mitt Romney for his religion.

But it comes at a time when the Obama campaign is trying to assert moral superiority on the subject of political attacks on religion. After it was revealed last week that some Republicans were planning to resurface Obama’s old minister, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, as a campaign issue, David Axelrod called for civility. Declaring Mormonism “off-limits” to the Democrat’s campaign, he called on Romney to follow their lead.

“We wish that Governor Romney would stand up as strongly and as resolutely, consistently, to refute these kinds of things on his side,” said David Axelrod on CNN’s State of the Union. “Instead, he’s amplified them in the past and he’s put logs on that fire, and that’s not leadership.”

The Obama campaign did not immediately respond to an e-mail from BuzzFeed asking whether they would repudiate Maher’s remarks.

UPDATE: Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith told BuzzFeed, “Attacking a candidate’s religion is out of bounds, and our campaign will not engage in it, and we don’t think others should either.”

UPDATE II: A spokesperson for Priorities USA Action, speaking on condition of anonymity, told BuzzFeed: “We do not think anyone should question a candidate because of their religion — it is an issue that has absolutely no place in this campaign.”

Great point Kenn. A person’s beliefs are the basis of why we’re voting for/against them. We have a right to judge people who are running for office on the soundness of their beliefs. Romney is part of a religion that did not grant black males the right to the priesthood for most of it’s history. The Mormon Church has relatively recently changed the policy(coincidentally in 1978 when their tax exempt status $$$$$ was at risk because of the law stating that discriminatory organizations will lose such status), but never repudiated it. Not only did the Mormon Church sit out the civil rights movement they were on the wrong side of it. As a black male, I can’t ask him about that in depth because it’s his religion? He has repeatedly stated that he believes in his church/prophet wholeheartedly. 11 of his church’s first 12 prophets over a 150 year period didn’t get a divine tap on the shoulder prompting them that this is wrong? If he has nothing to say about this, fine, then I will not vote for him on that basis alone. If I question him about the bigoted policies that were part of his religion into his 30s, then I’m the bigot? Please. Bigotry is about negatively judging a person for things that they are (race, country of origin, gender), not what they believe. For example, Mormonism’s entire, mammoth missionary program’s reason for being is to challenge people’s beliefs and encourage them to change those beliefs. They even knock on your door unsolicited to do so! And I can’t question his beliefs? Mitt, you’re even more of a narcissist than a Mormon. I think that being part of “the one and only true church” is just another narcissistic feather that you put in your own hat. This guy makes my skin crawl. Hey Mitt, go pray for some humility. And America, please let’s keep this pathetic, cretin out of the WH.

Maher donated money to the pro-Obama superPAC. The President or his campaign can not legally ask the SuperPAC to return that money - that is a violation of election law.

    • Maher went after the charity exemption last time, and I thought the argument was legitimate. The bulk of the money his church rakes in goes toward missionary trips for members. That is not charitable activity, it’s marketing.

Being willing to believe utterly irrational nonsense would appear quite relevant to determination of the competency of a candidate for office. The more religious the less competent, appears to be the rule. If their personal sex lives are open for inspection, their personal beliefs would seem even more relevant. If you are going to turn over important decisions to an imaginary super-being, it is in our interest to know that fact. In the past, doing so has not worked out well for humanity.

One of the best parts of this section is the Obama supporters going nuts every time his campaign gets even a sliver of criticism and scrutiny compared to the Romney campaign.

At least Buzzfeed is trying to post both sides. Though still in Obamas camp from what I see I have noticed lately a little more balance. Unlike Boing Boing which is solidly one point of view. So thanks for the effort Buzzfeed.

A big GOP donor says something stupid about women (putting aspirin between their knees to stop from getting pregnant) and we get days and weeks of coverage and demands the candidate(s) return the money he gave. Maher calls GOP females every name in the book and describes Mormonism as a “cult” and we get no only MSM silence but the left rushes to defended poor, misunderstood Maher. When does Obama give the $1 million back? Oh right, never….
