Audio Exclusive: The Speech That Landed Condi On Romney’s List
A call to “storm Washington D.C.” Speculation in Park City that “she wants to be Vice President.”
With The Drudge Report driving speculation that Condoleezza Rice is now a leading contender in the Republican veepstakes, campaign surrogates and supporters say Rice electrified Mitt Romney’s circle last month with a speech she delivered at the candidate’s closed-door June fundraising retreat in Park City.
Rice’s forceful and surprisingly partisan 13-minute address — audio of which has been obtained by BuzzFeed — won her two standing ovations from the gathering of big-money donors and GOP elite. It was widely considered the highlight of the weekend, several people present told BuzzFeed.
The standout performance took several people in Romney’s orbit by surprise. One surrogate said he was surprised by the red meat rhetoric employed by Rice, who has largely eschewed the political arena in recent years, devoting her time instead to an academic career at Stanford.
“She’s either very worried about a socialist threat to America, or she wants to be Vice President,” the surrogate said.
Rice would still be an unlikely selection as running mate. She is, for example, a supporter of abortion rights, and Romney has specifically promised anti-abortion groups that his running mate will share their views.
But Rice’s speech in Park City aptly captured the mood of conservatives, painting a bleak portrait of the “dangerous, chaotic times” facing the country, and blaming President Obama for bringing on international weakness, class warfare, and fiscal recklessness. She even urged those in attendance to “storm Washington D.C.” on behalf of Romney.
Framing her speech around three major “shocks to the international system” in the past decade — the 9/11 attacks, the global financial crisis, and the Arab Spring — Rice said Obama’s failed governance has thrown the world deeper into crisis.
“What we’re feeling most is not just that tumult, we’ve been through tumult before,” she said. “What we’re feeling is the absence of American leadership.”
She continued: “When our friends aren’t certain that they can count on us — and they aren’t so certain now — and when our foes don’t fear us or respect us, this is what you get: tumultuous, dangerous chaotic times,” Rice said.
Riffing on the Arab Spring, which she dubbed “in many ways, the most dramatic of all these shocks,” Rice said the various dictator-toppling movements were the inevitable and ultimate consequence of authoritarian rule. She compared it to the 1989 Romanian Revolution, when Communist leader Nicolae Ceaușescu was executed by his own people.
“The Ceaușescu moment is when what separates a dictator from his people, when fear breaks down,” she said, adding, “That’s what you see in the Middle East.”
She sounded other hawkish themes as well, condemning Obama for allowing America to be “governed by the lowest common denominator collective will of the so-called international community of the United Nations.” And she Romney’s absolute belief in “American exceptionalism.”
But the first moment that brought the crowd to its feet came when she moved from foreign to domestic policy, blasting the president for pitting the rich against the poor.
“It is a narrative that is being pushed by our current president, that ‘I’m doing poorly because you’re doing well,’” she said. “That has never been the American narrative. Ours has never been a narrative of aggrievement, and ours has never been a narrative of entitlement.”
And then, moments later, she received her second standing ovation by declaring, “It is time for all of us, in any way we can, to mobilize, get our act together, and storm Washington D.C.”

I see no sense in a Condi choice, or even Romney..Obama is what we do deserve!
It is high time I am loyal to someone or something else because this “awkwardness” of living for a “party” or ideal it just gags me. So I must give my complete loyalty allegiance, time, and money towards whomever it is that can give me the greatest peace of mind: to someone who loves and forgives me, to that someone who will help me when I fall, to someone who will not judge me according to the same Laws they themselves “pretend” to follow, to someone whose ideals and foundations never ever change.
Who will not betray my trust and hope, ever? Someone whose love is true. God… I choose you through your Son. If you will have me, Thank you, tdh -

Alexander Mackenzie 11 months agoCondi’s lack of a warmongering stance put her at odds with the Bush administration. She would be the perfect choice to add to Mitt’s ticket. I voted for our president, and don’t hate him. But I feel he is in favor of a much too intrusive policy in everyday citizen lives. I will be voting for Mitt in the hope that he will be more of a nationalist than a globalist. It is time to put America first again without excuses! I voted Democrat in 2008, Republican in 2010 and will again in 2012. And I pray this time it turns our “Right” (pun intended).

nonyabisnassp 11 months agoMitt Romney gave his entire inheritance from his Father to charity. Graduated from Harvard Business School and Harvard Law simultaneously. He took no salary as governor of Massachusetts. He was the unpaid President of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, turned it around and made the Winter Games profitable for the U.S. His company Bain Capital invested in several companies and helped them become successful like Staples, Domino’s, Brookstone, Dollarama, Warner Music, Home Depot and many others.

SteveTanton 11 months agoViva Condi!!! Apparently she’s a distraction to some of you… Consider for a moment that she’s a distraction NOT! Opinions based on old media hype are fine for the mindless, but perhaps it’s time to move away from the excessive “media-inspired” criticisms of George W. Bush et al. We all have disagreements, but let’s focus on the positive for a change. We have tasted the water of appeasement politics and it doesn’t go down so well. She was Bush’s National Security Advisor, then Secretary of State; she was not the President. She can stand on her own two feet - has the credentials and the fortitude. Politically, I look at it as a brilliant move, a coup of sorts. The United States needs to return to a leadership position on the basis of our belief in American exceptionalism and the realities of evil, not embrace the “Norman Vincent Peale Protestantism” (rigorous about themselves, value-free about others), the “Jimmy Carter” style foreign policy if you will, which the current administration has embraced to devastating ends. Her selection if it comes about will be based upon her mind, her résumé and her experience and proven ability; the fact that she’s a woman and black may be interesting or important to voters with an “American Idol” mentality, and it may bring positive feedback and votes along those lines, but it is inconsequential. “I think at a time when Iran may get nuclear weapons which may be passed on to terrorists, it is incredible that we should even be playing sort of demographic roulette and saying ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to have the first black President or the first woman President or whatever.’ We need whoever can do that job best because the future of the country depends on it.”- Thomas Sowell And so it goes for choosing a Vice-President if Romney desires a pro-active partner, not a mouse or fool as has often been the choice if not the man, but the position historically. Most recently, Dick Cheney was the antithesis of this tradition…I see Ms. Rice as the perfect compliment to Romney’s strengths. Condi Rice is an historian, a political scientist and diplomat with the highest of credentials and respect worldwide. If indeed Romney chooses Ms. Rice or even in suggesting he might, he is making a strong point about re-embracing “American Exceptionalism” that Reagan so passionately espoused and asserting strong world leadership while aggressively working to get our domestic house in order. Fiscal responsibility and good economic policy go hand in hand with strong, assertive foreign policy in a world awash with tyrants amidst the current global social and economic upheaval. Condoleezza Rice knows this well: “The upcoming elections loom as one of the most important in my lifetime.” – Condoleezza Rice at a recent Romney retreat in Utah.
