A Nation Divided (By Hipster Glasses)
Different sections of the country wear very different kinds of glasses, it turns out.
Glasses company Warby Parker released a year-end report today. The most interesting bit described which frames are popular in different parts of the country.
Two frames are vastly more popular than the others: Preston and Zagg. Together, they account for the most popular models in almost every state.
2. This is the map for Preston frames:
3. This is what Preston frames look like:
4. This is the map for Zagg frames:
5. And this is what Zaggs look like:
The glasses are both thick-framed and plastic — this is Warby Parker after all, the NYC-based startup which the NYT described as popular “among young, urban myopics,” and which is clearly angling for a certain, ahem, hipster demographic. But they’re very different: Prestons are the quintessential and/or stereotypical hipster frames, while the Zaggs are more recognizably just… glasses.
Style analysis aside (and feel free to push it way, way, way to the side), it’s still surprising to find large, contiguous geographic blocs distinguished by glasses frames: bigger lenses dominate the edges of the country, while smaller ones dominate the center. What does that mean? Do we have to have a war, now? Which side will you be on?

joshualoganb 3 months agoMajor fail! Just because someone wears non-prescription black framed glasses, makes geeky references and wears geeky tee-shirts doesn’t make them “hip” in any sense of the word IMHO. Being a “so called hipster” is supposed to be more of a state of mind then based on anything materialistic and superficial.

cicadetta 4 months agoAs a life-long glasses wearer, I for one am irritated that thick plastic frames are so ridiculously trendy right now. I had to get new glasses last year, and the wire frame options were few and far between at my optometrist’s office. (I look awful in thick frames.) At least there was one pair that worked. The choice was easy, so… there’s that, I guess.

betam2 4 months agoThe worst part of this is the folks who decide to wear them when they don’t need glasses. Can we get an Amen?! Glasses don’t make you a hipster (mostly because of the large bandwagon everyone has jumped on, thank you very much) Zagg and Preston sell because it’s the cheapest way for someone to look “ironic.” If you truly want to be authentically hip, shell out $$ for Shuron like I did. They made the originals back in 1947 and are still producing them.

Holly Gofightly 4 months agoI wanted a pair of Ray-Ban wayfarers for as long as I could remember. They’re classically stylish and look good on my half-Asian face. It kind of sucked that, by the time I could actually afford them, they were considered “hipster glasses,” but whatever—I like what I like and at least mine are prescription.

elli 4 months agoThose glasses are ugly and you’re all stupid for wearing them. It’s not ironic anymore, it’s mainstream and you’re doing the opposite of what you think you’re doing.

Lola Betton 4 months agoIt’s only stupid to wear them if you don’t actually require corrective lenses.

Skeeterplayswow 4 months agoWow, I would have gotten laid so much MORE if this debate could have been going on 15 years ago when I had no choice but to wear these horrible, ugly, plastic framed monstrosities because my parents were poor.
