New York Politician Wears Blackface And Afro, Doesn’t Think He’s Being Racist

“It was Purim. People dress up.”

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

2. This is how Assemblyman Hikind, center, dressed up for the Jewish holiday Purim.

With his wife and son, via Facebook

Politicker reports that Hikind hired a professional makeup artist to transform him for the “basketball player” costume.

After some backlash, Hikind issued the following statement:

Yes, I wore a costume on Purim and hosted a party. Most of the people who attended also wore costumes. Everywhere that Purim was being celebrated, people wore costumes. It was Purim. People dress up.

I am intrigued that anyone who understands Purim — or for that matter understands me — would have a problem with this. This is political correctness to the absurd. There is not a prejudiced bone in my body.

It wasn’t black face it was a costume. “Blackface” was a form of theatrical makeup used in minstrel shows in the 19th century! Pretty sure it was a costume party… Here we go again with the Hurtfeeli-oma! Grow up

I’m a full Korean American democrat, and to be honest I think the people saying this is racist are plain overdramatic. If it was a black guy dressing as a white guy we’d all laugh and think it was funny. But god forbid someone does the opposite. I think we can all use common sense and judge for ourselves the difference between racism and a joke.

      NOT OFFENSIVE.
And here’s why: 1.) First and foremost, Buzzfeed either intentionally or unintentionally misworded this entire article claiming the politician dressed up as “Blackface”. This in turn has already given the readers the prejudice that this is a form of “racism”. However, if anybody who knows anything about history, “Blackface” is a particular type of makeup used in theatre and film in which a person is painted PITCH BLACK with BIG LIPS as an over-the-top exaggerated caricature of the stereotype of Africans. THIS is not BLACKFACE. 2.) He is dressed up as an Afro-American basketball player. Who cares if there are Caucasian and Asian basketball players. He wants to dress up as an Afro-American one? Let him do it. Just because he’s white doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be allowed to dress up as another race for a costumed themed party. 3.) This is NOT RACIST. I cannot believe how many people misconstrue the term “racism” to the point that it’s been so watered down. To be racist is to personally believe that one race is SUPERIOR to another. Now ask yourself, how does this say he thinks ANY OTHER RACE IS SUPERIOR TO BLACK PEOPLE? You can’t, right? That’s what I thought.  If you’re offended by this, you need to check yourself and SERIOUSLY think about why you’re offended. I’m Asian, and if somebody dressed up in a karate costume and drew slanted eyes on their face would I be offended? Hell no. It’s a FUCKING COSTUME.  Get over yourselves everybody. Stop feeling so entitled and quit playing the victim.

I care. ATTENTION WHITE PEOPLE….just because you declare something to no longer be offensive, doesn’t mean that it’s OK. Blackface is STILL very offensive! Not Cool.

Ahhh, racism! Lots of people just don’t want to give it up. At least they let everyone know they are douchbag bigots.
