We are most certainly using drone strike to specifically target alleged Taliban leaders. So it's understandable why these soldiers are angry and confused with the double talk. None of this is to say that the Taliban aren't a destructive, awful force in the region, but let's stop pretending the U.S. has any problem with tyrannical elements in the Middle East. Shit, we materially support most of them. And maybe if we got the hell out of the region, Afghan civilians would stop flocking to the largest group of armed militants fighting our presence out of a very understandable survivalist impulse.

We had armed the Taliban against the Soviets previously. If we categorically coat everyone with the terrorist brush we will never get anything finished there. I wouldn't say we're friendly or allies, but stabilizing Afghanistan is more important to long-term security then exterminating the Taliban.

Well we did end up killing our way through around 30,000 Afghanis, so even though we typically view foreign lives as worthless, 10 for 1 is a pretty good deal don't you think?

I think that the issue with the Taliban probably stems from them harboring terrorists and protecting them. I guess you do not have a problem with that but just so you know, if someone kills a bunch of people in a store and then you hide that person at your house. Most of society will find you to be a pretty bad person. If you lie or keep us from bringing that person in, you pretty much just crossed the line into being just as guilty. I read the interview and I understand what he was trying to say, but he shouldn't have said it this close to an election. Of course he wants to protect this country, he just doesn't want a frivolous war or to seem hostile and attract even more ire than we already have. Still, since no one (especially the right) will read the entire thing, and instead will hear about it from Fox News pundits… it was a very bad thing to say.
