WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders Friday afternoon will switch their Facebook and Twitter avatars to a picture of text from Bob Woodward’s book, The Price of Politics showing the looming sequester was first proposed by the White House.

The bit of tongue-in-cheek theater by Republicans is in response to the White House’s release of a fact sheet on the “devastating” effects the sequester could have on the economy.

Although both chambers of Congress voted for the sequester as a way of forcing itself and the White House to actually address spending and debt issues, Republicans aren’t letting Obama forget it was his idea.

“President Obama created the sequester, and he is entirely responsible for the devastating consequences for America’s economy and national security if it goes into effect,” said Michael Steel, a spokesman for Speaker John Boehner.

“The House has passed legislation – twice – to replace these cuts with other common-sense cuts and reforms. We all agree that President Obama’s sequester is bad – but what is President Obama going to do about it?”

Republicans are also debuting a new twitter hashtag, #obamaquester.

Obama wanted either a clean debt ceiling increase or a grand bargain on debt reduction. The sequestration was a desperate offer to get the GOP to back of their debt ceiling hostage taking. Spkr. Boehner claimed he was “happy” with the deal and that it was “98%” what he wanted. It wasn’t anywhere near the President’s preferred policy outcome. The GOP threatened to blow up the economy, stalled the recovery and got our credit rating downgraded, an extremely brazen tactic from which they wrung out the sequestration deal. It wouldn’t have existed if not for their unprecedented power play. They demanded it and they own it. It’s a sick joke to spin it as if the President actually preferred that outcome. As things stand the Dems would happily do away with it if the GOP would allow it, but of course the Republicans are demanding it be replaced by equal cuts instead of just writing it off as the terrible mistake they’re responsible for creating.
