A fire tore through a San Francisco apartment building Tuesday night, killing one person and injuring six others.
Firefighters arrived at the burning Mission District building, which houses dozens of families, after 7 p.m., the San Francisco Chronicle reported. The fire killed one man, and six other people were treated for smoke inhalation, according to NBC 11.
Crews also rescued at least 12 people, according to the Chronicle.
After several hours of fighting the blaze, crews appeared to have it under control. However, the fire then spread, and by 10 p.m. was still not contained.
"When I got on scene, crews had a very good handle on (the fire), but it immediately ran the attic" Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White told the Chronicle. As the night wore on, officials expressed concern that the building's roof could collapse, CBS 5 reported.
Nearly 60 displaced people gathered at a nearby evacuation center, NBC 11 reported.
Fire officials did not immediately respond to a BuzzFeed News request for comment.
