Dronestagram Brings Drone Strikes Abroad A Little Closer To Home

Drawing on information from the Bureau of Investigative Journalism and other media reports, British blogger and artist James Bridle compiles Google satellite images to show what the areas where drone strikes hit really look like. 1. Wadi Abeeda, Marib Province, Yemen

Aug. 6, 2013: Four men killed in the fourth strike in 10 days, part of a coordinated response to an impending al-Qaeda attack, according to unnamed U.S. officials. As many as five missiles were fired at the vehicle as it drove through the central province of Marib in the early hours, which "turned [it] into a ball of fire."

2. Wadi Ser, Hadramout, Yemen

Aug. 1, 2013: A Toyota Hilux was targeted in a dawn strike, killing all four occupants, on the same day that Yemen's President Hadi visited the White House to discuss counterterrorism and political reform. Unnamed media sources claimed the dead were al-Qaeda militants, but locals claimed they were civilian Al-Sai'aar tribesman, including one child. The bodies were too badly burned to identify.

3. Al Saeed, Shabwa Province, Yemen

July 30, 2013: A dawn strike on two vehicles traveling together killed three people, two Yemenis and one Saudi Arabian. One of the dead was later reported to be Al Khidr Husayn al Jadani, "AQAP's [al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula] overall commander in Abyan." His predecessor in the post was killed by a drone strike in January 2012.

4. Shawal, North Waziristan, Pakistan

July 28, 2013: Five to eight people killed by multiple missiles fired at a house in the Shawal Valley. The group was gathered for Iftar dinner — the breaking of the daily fast for Ramadan — and was believed to have recently returned from Afghanistan.

5. Al Mahfad, Yemen

June 1, 2013: A drone strike in Abyan province of Al Mahfad killed at least seven people in two missile launches on vehicles, nine days after President Obama gave a speech saying such strikes would only be used when targets posed a "continuing and imminent threat to the American people."

6. Datta Khel, Pakistan

March 10, 2013: Two to three people killed by a strike in North Waziristan on the Afghan/Pakistan border, riding horses or motorbikes. Identities unknown. Rescue work was reportedly delayed as drones hovered over the area after the strike.

7. Qayfa, al Bayda Province, Yemen

Jan. 23, 2013: A strike on two motorcycles missed or partially missed its target, hitting the house of Abdu Mohammed al-Jarrah, killing several people including al-Jarrah’s two children.

8. Agdoor Adda, South Waziristan, Pakistan

Jan. 2, 2013: Six to 10 people killed in Agdoor Adda, close to the Afghan border, by a night strike on a house. The dead included Maulvi Nazir, a Taliban leader who supported attacks in Afghanistan but not against the Pakistani government.

9. Rada'a, Al Bayda', Yemen

Dec. 24, 2012: Two killed and three injured in the town of Rada'a, Southern Yemen. One of the deaths is believed to be Abdel-Raouf Naseeb, who escaped the first recorded drone strike in Yemen on Nov. 3, 2003.

10. Buland Khil, Pakistan

Oct. 11 2012: Sixteen to 26 people reported killed, five to 15 are reported injured, and there were possible civilian casualties.
