richards25 8 months agoSo true. Not to mention, less than 8% of Sesame Street’s funding comes from Federal tax dollars. They don’t need it. We can’t afford it. End of discussion.

Benjamin Sapiens 8 months agoSesame Street would survive, but it would probably end up being broadcast on some cable channel, where only those children whose parents are rich enough to afford a cable subscription would be able to watch it. The point of PBS is that it allows anyone with a TV can watch quality, educational, informative programing. Defunding PBS won’t destroy Sesame Street, but it will make NOVA, National Geographic, American Experience, Frontline, Ken Burns, Nature, NewsHour, P.O.V., Masterpiece, Charlie Rose, Independent Lens and dozen of other fantastic shows unavailable to the American public.

Moagie 8 months agoYes, Sesame Street will be okay. But the next outstanding children’s program (that isn’t actually an ad for toys or cereal) will never get created in the first place. PBS launches countless shows that would never get a foodhold in commercial TV, but that make our society better.

douchiousl 8 months agoIf you knew anything about anything, you would know that the money from the Government that goes to NPR and PBS is distributed to the states to help with Affiliates in neighborhoods like mine and yours. Great Example: Live from Mountain Stage, a weekly radio show here in WV, that receives partial funding from said money, and promotes amazing musicians from across the country, boosting their sales and attendance at their events and in turn helping our economy.

abrahamc3 8 months agoSesame Street is only on for an hour or so 5 days a week on PBS. Romney did not say he was going to cut funding to Sesame Street, he said he would cut funding to PBS. So what will happen to the 90% of other shows on PBS that do not have all of the extra revenue that Sesame Street has? The point here is that PBS and Sesame Street are not one and the same. Your is right however, Sesame Street will be fine without government subsidies but PBS will not be and those areas of the country that do not privately support PBS will probably lose their stations and hence will also lose free access to Sesame Street.
