Nintendo Announces Successor To Wii, The Wii U

At E3 today, Nintendo unveiled its follow up to the Wii, the Wii U. On top of offering souped-up HD graphics that are expected to be on par with or surpass the Playstation 3, the new home console system offers a radical reinvention of the standard video game controller. The Wii U boasts a tablet with a 6.2 inch touch screen that can act as a second screen in addition to your television. This promo video show off the controller’s many features, including video chat and web browsing. Also in the mix is a peek at the brand new, unnamed Zelda game for Wii U.

I know, right? Now tell your friends!

If you’re 13 and/or already have a Wii this is a perfect addition. It just won’t make me convert from the awesomeness that is Xbox 360

The only fail here is the presentation itself, so much misunderstanding has spread already it’s scary. If the console wasn’t ready they should have held off, but alas I suppose E3 demanded they try and one up the competition. The thing has immense potential for gaming, unlike all the other gimmicks out there at the moment (lest we forget, every company is about gimmicks at the moment - not just Nintendo). If they can increase first party support in addition to the superior third party support and graphics then this will be excellent. It looks like you only need one of the expensive ‘controllers’ too as the wii remotes work in tandem with it.

I have to say I’m pretty skeptical about this. The control looks insanely awkward and is probably going to be damn expensive. The DS has two screens, and I’ve not found many games that utilize them both well. I’m not expecting any different result with this system. A few will be great, like the Zelda games for the DS, but most will not deliver…so what’s the point?

It’s a NEW CONSOLE with a NEW CONTROLLER. Here is a section of the press release. sorry its so long. Previously, video games played on a home console have been confined to the TV and offered identical viewpoints to each player in a multiplayer environment. Furthermore, watching TV and playing console games have been completely separate experiences. The new controller removes these boundaries, creating a more dynamic and fluid gaming and entertainment experience. Visitors to the E3 Expo will see firsthand the type of gaming experiences made possible by Wii U and the new controller such as: · In single-player games: o The new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the TV. o The information and viewpoint can also change in the new controller based on the orientation of its gyroscope. · In multiplayer games: o The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV. This will offer a wide variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities. In addition to the 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers. Adding these features to the Classic Controller™ button scheme – two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons – will enable a breadth of game-play experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players. Wii U combines motion-sensing game play with the ability to support full HD graphics. Each Wii U console will be partnered with a new controller and can also use up to four additional Wii Remote™ or Wii Remote Plus controllers. The system is also backward compatible and can play all Wii games and use all Wii accessories. The Wii console has sold more than 86 million units globally and greatly expanded the overall audience for video games. Wii U aims to expand that audience even further. Developers worldwide are already working on new games and experiences for the console. “Wii U redefines the structure of home entertainment by fundamentally changing how the TV, the game console and the Internet function and interact together,” said Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. “The experience enabled by Wii U and the new controller takes players deeper into their games, while reaching out wider than ever before to be inviting to all kinds of gamers.” For the duration of the E3 Expo, Nintendo will provide fans with exclusive videos and Nintendo content on the Nintendo Network. People can visit http://e3.nintendo.comto watch developer interviews, get all the information about new games and see coverage coming directly from the show floor. The same exclusive content also will be streamed through the Nintendo® Channel to Wii owners who have a broadband Internet connection.

Wait…so it’s just a controller? I can’t, say, take it on the train?

    • taylorw5 a year ago

How about everyone that is whining about this new system actually try it when it comes out, and then make your judgement? If it’s such a big problem to you, don’t buy it.

People seem to be forgetting that this is just the CONTROLLER.  There’s a whole new console with it too. I don’t know why the didn’t show it off at E3, bt it’s there. I mean, come on people, you should be smart enough to know the Wii alone couldn’t handle this thing.

The Zelda game alone is enough to make me get one. Holy shiz…

That isn’t the successor to the Wii, that’s just an overpriced extension of the Wii. All they’ve done is update what I could do almost 10 years ago in Zelda WindWaker by hooking up my Gameboy Advance to my Gamecube.  They haven’t added Bluray capabilities or HD Gameplay. They’re just making you buy another aftermarket goody that they’ll pack into the new Wii’s just to jack the price back up to the $300 Sony and Microsoft make you pay for their systems. And what’s astonishing is that it’s just a polished version of a failed idea they had a decade ago. This is major fail. Major fail all the way around. Without HD/Bluray Graphics to give you a gameplay experience similar to PS3 and 360 there’s no point to this. It’s one thing to innovate and bring users a new gaming experiece, but without addressing the single biggest complaint/reason serious gamers don’t use the Wii the Wii-U is meaningless and unnecessary. TL:DR - Wii-U is an unnecessary overpriced and gimmicky addition to an increasingly out-of-date system from a company that continues to insist on telling you what you want instead of listening to what you want.
