From this morning’s New Hampshire debate, here’s Rick Santorum’s response to the question: “What if you had a son who came up to you and said he was gay?” And it was a response given with zero hesitation.
I think every one here has fallen for Sanitorium’s statement. Sanitorium said, “I would love him just as much as the second before he said it.” Sanitorium is hate-filled and, like Newt Gingrigh, thinks of no one but himself, is a self-appointed arbiter of moral probity, and an ego-maniac. Take Sanitorium at his word. Sanitorium didn’t love his son before he told Sanitorium that he is gay and he still won’t love his son after his son outs himself. Of course, there’s another possibility: Sanitorium says this because he knows it would never happen. Sanitorium’s son is much more likely to commit suicide then to tell his father he’s gay. Sanitorium knows this and is banking on it so that he will never have to eat his words on this issue.
As a politically active teenage boy, I volunteered for Women’s Rights organizations left, right, and center. Rick Santorum was always a nightmare for all the groups that I worked with. Later in college, I volunteered in D.C. for a Congressman. I watched with horror as people who only saw his public-political face, fell for his smooth-talking lies and elected him to the Senate. I have been following Santorum’s split-personality for a long time. Whenever he think he can get away with it, out come his bombastic statements and extreme politics. Rick has a long history of using uber-hateful, Racist, Sexist, Homophobic, and anti-difference slander in places which seem completely off-topic, because he’s crazy like a fox at channeling bigotry into “religious”-based politics. Like when Rick went after a pro-choice group I belonged to by labeling their typical supporter as “a Lesbian with a staple through her cheek”, as a guy with no decorative body-modifications I took umbrage then and I still find him despicable. Right now he’s in a charm-offensive posture, but look under his mask and all the charm will fade away until you see that he’s just plain offensive. Don’t be fooled and don’t let others be fooled, because he is counting on fooling enough people to get in the white house and then watch out. Methinks he protests too much against the men who like men…maybe he had “an experience” when younger that left his judgmental little soul scared..I mean scarred…for life that he might have like it a bit too much….the WORST kind of homophobic reaction!
Perhaps “Rick” himself had an experience years ago that he may have secretly liked too much and reacted violently to the other extreme? I’ve seen it more than once in homophobic so-called straight men…they are the most dangerous because they have so much at stake in their denial.
Rick’s answer is fine, genuine, and there is no contradiction. It is absolutely possible to both love someone and disapprove of their behavior. Conservatives do not hate gay people, they simply believe homosexual behavior is immoral and that gay relationships don’t serve the same function in society as committed heterosexual relationships (and given the basics of sexual reproduction, the biological and sociological demands of raising a child, and the fact that the three major world religions specifically prohibit homosexual behavior in scripture, it’s a reasonable position to hold). Some people believe eating pork or meat is immoral, it doesn’t mean they hate people who do it. Some people believe masturbating or looking at pornography is immoral, it doesn’t mean they hate people who do it. Some people believe drug use is immoral, it doesn’t mean they hate people who do it. It is only in the context of the gay marriage debate that liberals constantly push this notion that “If you disagree with them you hate them.” It’s a childish argument with no real merit or logic to back it up but the media has latched onto it and helps perpetuate it. If you support gay marriage, argue on the merits of biological facts, sociological studies, and religious moral philosophy. When you simply write off everyone who disagrees with you as ignorant or hateful, you’re practicing bigotry and intolerance, not fighting it.
Unless he wanted to marry the love of his life. Then, all bets are off.
Speechwriter: “Mr. Santorum, memorize this answer to this particular question. You will be asked eventually”
Santorum: -After reading- “Wait, so I have to love him as much as before?”
Speechwriter: “Yes. Just memorize it, you’ll be fine”
-pause-
Santorum: “Can I still do what I have to, to get him fixed?”
Speechwriter: “Well, I suppose but don’t mention that”
I must say, my mom use to say she thinks gays should have the same right, just don’t call it a marriage, and that they are alright people. She would say a few horrible things now and again but I didn’t think about it. Then when I came out as gay to her, she flipped the freak out. Said I was a horrible person that I need to get my hormones fixed to be straight again. She kept calling me degrading names and drinking more and more to deal with what I had told her. She told me that I had ruined the family and that I better not tell anybody else that I was gay or else! So when Rick says he’d still love his kid, I can’t help but not believe him!
His version of love includes compulsory attendance at gay conversion camp, so…

@ The people saying “oh so it’s okay if his sons gay” and “he says he will love him but he really will try to make him straight” or “how can he be anti but support his gay son”… Easy the same way I can be against murder but still protect my child if he kills someone… Because he is MY CHILD and I love him no matter what … Obviously none of you retards have kids that or you don’t love them…
What did you expect him to say? that he would leave him in a ditch? I think some people confuse “conservative” with “objectivist with anti-social and homicidal tendencies”. I’ve said it once, I will say it again: CONSERVATIVES ARE NOT BAD PEOPLE they merely share a personal philosophy that YOU may or may not disagree with. My sweet little grandmother is a fox news watching conservative, does that make HER some kind of stone-hearted monster? (btw, before I get accused of not having a realistic perspective on this issue, remember that I am not only a lifelong liberal but also a trans woman. I’m just sick of constantly hearing that anybody who isn’t liberal is some kind of sociopath. If you’re a liberal and you can’t defend your beliefs to a conservative, as equals, with respect, without ad hominems or emotional appeals, then you’re not sophisticated enough to represent our party)
I should add that it’s what he’s NOT saying here that’s the issue. On the surface, he says he’d love him and try to be a good father. But with his past statements, he means he will love his gay son just as long as he never does anything gay, never has gay sex, never gets into a gay relationship, and eventually gets over it and marries a woman, and he’ll be a good father by ensuring that’s exactly how it plays out.
