Laptop Spycams

A Philadelphia high school is being accused of giving out laptops equipped with cameras that could be remotely accessed. One student claims he was disciplined for improper behavior based on a photograph taken in his home by his school-issued laptop. This wins today's “Least Credible Story Reported by Credible Sources” Prize. I kind of hope it's true, just because, holy fuck.

  • Oh, and check out this little gem from the telegraph.co.uk article: A statement from the school said: “The District is dedicated to protecting and promoting student privacy. HORSESHIT! Invading and destroying student privacy is more like it. The laptops do contain a security feature intended to track lost, stolen and missing laptops. Maybe it was *INTENDED* to be a security feature, but that's not the way you used it! I noticed there was no mention of this kid's laptop being lost or stolen before you spied on him! This feature has been deactivated effective today.” Yeah, it has…now that you've been busted and sued! There are some people working in this school district that need to be fuckin fired over this shit.

  • Way to go, Philly school district! Good way to ensure the kids are going to start erasing everything off those nice, pricey laptops you (I mean WE, as in WE TAXPAYERS!!) so generously provided for their education (I mean for their observation!) The kids that know what they're doing will figure out ways to stop the school from spying on them with those laptop cameras and the ones who don't know what they're doing will wreck the damn things and make the cost of upkeep go way up. And when did it become the school's job to discipline a kid for something he did at home anyway?

  • “There was of course no way of knowing whether you were being watched at any given moment. How often, or on what system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was guesswork. It was even conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live—did live, from habit that became instinct—in the assumption that every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every movement scrutinized.”

  • Holy cow. I only just now made the connection between you and the LOST Jack Shepherd. Jeez. If there's a John Locke on staff I'm going to punch myself in the ballbag.

  • I'm pretty sure most laptop webcams can be accessed remotely in order to take pictures without you knowing.
