tiffanym9 a year agoThis is a great post. I notice some things now remind me of the book 1984. I’m more reminded of Fahrenheit 451 with a lot of things that are around today. For example he predicted big flat screen tvs, ipods, people not knowing how to talk very well to each other & not talking to each other in person very often, people loving & valuing their things more than other people, people hating reading & books & just wanting to stare at screens all the time. He predicted this all without knowing what would happen in the future. I mean when Ray Bradbury wrote Fahrenheit 451 tvs were around but he didn’t want one then. I found out recently he has a website. I often wonder what he thinks of everything around today. Maybe I should write to Ray Bradbury sometime.

Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny “failed to take into account man’s almost infinite appetite for distractions”. In 1984, Huxley added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. I completely agree & have stated on many occasion that Orwell was right but inaccurate. Big Brother is here, watching us, only because we are brazenly performing in front of him.
