Rutgers Student Dies After Drinking At Frat House

Sophomore Caitlyn Kovacs was taken to a hospital around 3 a.m. Sunday after she "became distressed," officials said. An investigation into how she died is ongoing.

Local authorities are investigating after a 19-year-old Rutgers University student died after she attended a "small gathering" at a frat house, the Associated Press reported.

Investigators are still determining how sophomore Caitlyn Kovacs died, but it appears to be alcohol-related, Middlesex County, New Jersey, prosecutors said.

She had passed out at the Delta Kappa Epsilon house around 3 a.m. Sunday, the Daily Targum reported. Her friends took her to a hospital, where she died shortly after.

In 1988, James Callahan, an 18-year-old freshman at Rutgers University student, died from drinking too much.

Callahan was consuming kamikazes, which contained mostly vodka and triple sec, in a fraternity event where prospective members were encouraged to make themselves sick.

The incident raised major concerns about the role of fraternities and alcohol on campus.

On behalf of the International Fraternity of Delta Kappa Epsilon and the Brothers of our chapter at Rutgers University, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Caitlyn Kovacs. We also wish to extend our sympathies to the students of Rutgers University as they endure this time of grief and misfortune. As the investigation of the incident is ongoing, Delta Kappa Epsilon is fully cooperating with local and county authorities.

Counseling will be available to students, university officials said.
