rjp 6 months agoWhat is being under reported is that earlier this year the company TRIPLED it’s CEO’s pay from $750,000 to $250,000, and increased nine other executives’ compensation by as much as 80 percent. One executive received a pay increase from $500,000 to $900,000 and another received one taking his salary from $375,000 to $656,256. So much for leadership.

dangerouslytalented 6 months ago… and a vulture capitalist corporation bought up hostess and closed up a bunch of factories and loaded up the company with debt… Hostess debt levels from this kind of thing were in excess of 800 million dollars.

therblig 6 months agogrowing up, we always called wonder bread “cancer bread” because of all the chemicals assumed to provide its otherworldly softness. that and the fact that twinkies used to be made with animal lard was enough for me to swear off hostess products. maybe enough other health-concerned consumers felt the same way. sad for the workers that management made so many bad decisions. sadder still that those same short-sighted executives will probably have a much easier time finding new jobs.

cynthiag6 6 months agoAnd management has petitioned the bankruptcy court for permission to pay $1.7 MILLION in BONUSES for the idiots who led the company into bankruptcy! The union had already given pay and other concessions to try to save the ailing company…owned by between 2 and 5 hedge funds….they want the bankruptcy so they can sell the patents for ding dongs, twinkies, ho hos, etc…and make even more $$. The rich are over-reaching so much. That $1.7 millions would have paid workers for how long? But bonuses for terrible job performance? Or was the whole idea to trash the company and sell off the pieces? That’s what Bain did…

It was not the unions, it was the decision by management to close all the local bakeries that produced their bread and bake everything in central locations, and ship everything across the country from there. This can’t work with bread because of its very very short shelf life (bakeries have to sell off today’s bread at half price at the end of the day, because it is stale tomorrow). They tried using enzymes to increase shelf life, but this made the bread taste funny. The result is a decline in sales, and, combined with the Atkins diet and the rise of Krispy Kreme (which are almost, but not quite, as bad), this meant that Hostess had gigantic bread factories which were not economically viable, because you can’t ship bread overnight from a central distribution centre, because it can’t be warehoused. MANAGEMENT FUCKED IT UP (while giving themselves ever increasing pay and bonuses) and the workers paid the price AND THEN WERE BLAMED FOR IT.

I don’t think bread going stale quickly had anything to do with it, seeing as how store-bought bread typically lasts at least a week after you get it from the store and hardly any American families get or make fresh bread anymore, and haven’t for decades. Not to mention that I would imagine (though I’m just guessing) Hostess made far more off their cream-filled confections (“Where’s the cream filling? Hostess: that’s the stuff!”) than they did off Wonder bread.

Store bought bread typically lasts a week, but it takes half that long to get the stuff to the shelves, because it is all produced in vast centralised factories. Twinkies, despite urban legends, only last for 7-10 days before they become stale, even with the enzymes that increase the shelf life.
