Tech Buzz A new Flash game from Pixel Jam, the same people who brought you the 8-bit classic Gamma Brothers. Dino Run has a great blippy soundtrack and is way more fun than a game where you make a dinosaur run from destruction should be.
Tech Buzz Intentionally turning up in the background of other people’s photographs with the goal of ruining them now has a name: Photobombing. I do this daily, unintentionally, walking along Canal Street to work, but the art of the photobomber is appearing in the background at just the right moment and with just the right face.
Tech Buzz After a series of recent career stumbles, Amanda Congdon, the former Rocketboom hostess is back with an interactive variety show. See what happens when you get too big for your britches? You come crawling back to the stinkin’ Internet. It’s not so bad around here after all, is it, Congdon?
Tech Buzz A site devoted to the bad party photos of strangers. Plucking images from Flickr, reading through Sorry I Missed Your Party is like going through your camera the morning after and discovering a bunch of photos you A) don’t remember taking, or B) wish you hadn’t taken.
Tech Buzz Photos of the first RIM clamshell flip phone have been unveiled. It will be out by the end of 2008. A novel flip phone seems kind of oxymoronic, but that’s what this phone is being touted as.
Tech Buzz You can now customize your Google home page with skins designed by big name artists and designers. Google recruited 68 artists, designers and musicians to create the ‘Artist Themes’ including Dolce and Gabbana, Diane Von Fustenberg and Oscar de la Renta, Shepard Fairey, Philippe Starck, Todd Oldman, Jeff Koons, and Marc Ecko. It’s fun to switch it up but in most cases what works on a wrap dress doesn’t really work as a web design.
Tech Buzz Saturday, May 3 is international Shutdown Day. The idea is simple, if slightly insane: Turn off your computer and leave it off for 24 hours. You’ll be able to do other things, like take a walk in the park, talk to people face to face or go see a show — you know, things that don’t involve the internet. Sounds scary.
Tech Buzz Built-in Wi-Fi detectors are popping up on watches, bags, pens, T-Shirts and even sneakers. As much as I am ready to embrace my inner geek, I think I am going to hold out for the Wi-Fi sniffing platform gladiator sandals.
Tech Buzz MySpace Karaoke will allow users to belt out their favorite songs, record their renditions, and stick them up on their MySpace profile. A place for friends…and terrible singing? It seems kind of random. But it has inspired us to start working on our BuzzFeed side project, the Glow Dick (you can send any inquiries to editor@buzzfeed.com).
Tech Buzz The sex in the new version of Grand Theft Auto isn’t even hidden. Apparently the video games rating board saw and signed off on all the simulated sex in Grand Theft Auto IV. That isn’t stopping one of the game’s chief foes, Jack Thompson, is trying to get the game pulled from the shelves.
Tech Buzz The a new version of the classic game goes to the Wii, gamers rejoice. As Mario would put it, “Mario Kart, Wii! Woohoo!!” In the running for best feature: Networked racing against your friends (or complete strangers, if that’s how you roll), with the ability to find their current game and join it.
Tech Buzz Tania Derveaux is offering to have sex with every virgin who defends net neutrality. Her quest is to “wage war with love” in defense of free speech and internet freedom. Any virgin who can prove that they defend net neutrality is eligible. However, the rules forbid any “surprise buttsex,” and services can be denied for hygiene reasons.
Tech Buzz A graduate student named James Karl Buck helps free himself from an Egyptian jail with a one-word blog post from his cell phone. The post was broadcast using the micro-blogging platform Twitter. He is currently trying to save his translator Mohammed Maree, who is still being held. Apparently Twitter has other uses besides broadcasting pithy thoughts and mundane activity lists to your friends. It just goes to show that if it weren’t for web 2.0, we’d probably all be jobless, in jail, or dead.
Tech Buzz Who needs a clunky old iPhone when you can play music through your third-generation iPod Nano into one of these sleeves with built-in speakers? Reviews are mixed, but it’s a safer bet than lugging around a boombox (if you just arrived from fifteen years ago, that is).
Tech Buzz We’ve redesigned. But there’s more to come! Hope you like the new look (props to our designer, Chris, and Mark and Eric on the development side), but we’ll also be rolling out some new features in the months to come that will bring you buzz in all sorts of new ways. You can sign up now to get info about our new publishing platform. And if you’ve got tips, hit our editors at editor@buzzfeed.com.
Tech Buzz Designer Erik De Nijs has created pair of pants with a built in keyboard and mouse. The nerd blogs are atwitter with criticisms, suggesting all sorts of naughty applications for the “Beauty and the Geek” pants. I’m willing to wager that they are actually some conceptual artistic statement on how humans are becoming one with their gadgets.
