NRA Promises "Meaningful" Contributions
The gun group breaks its silence. “We were shocked, saddened, and heartbroken.”
National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam emails the first statement from the organization since Friday’s massacre in Newtown.
National Rifle Association of America is made up of four million moms and dads, sons and daughters – and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown.
Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting.
The NRA is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again.
The NRA is planning to hold a major news conference in the Washington, DC area on Friday, December 21.

If what they have to say will offend common decency, then we have a pretty good idea what they plan to communicate. If what they want to contribute will be helpful rather than hurtful, how could that violate common decency?

introvert 5 months agoIf the NRA doesn’t speak up, that’s bad. If the NRA speaks up, that’s bad because they’re unaccustomed to communicating with others outside their circle. At this point, the only way the NRA salvages this is to throw their full support behind mental health by way of Obamacare. If the NRA can sponsor a wine club, they sure as hell can back mental health care.

Plante12 5 months agoCome on now , this was a crime perpetrated by a sick individual. It is not the gun that did this a sick person did. The NRA was stepping back so douche bags like yourselves wouldn’t say stupid things like ” see they don’t care “. If someone runs over a family in his escalade while drunk do you expect Cadillac to take the rap for the innocent deaths.

oOo 5 months agoYou could kill somebody by dropping a pallet of bricks on them too but that’s not what bricks are made for. So no, you wouldn’t blame the brick maker, or the maker of the crane that lifted them. Likewise, in your example, Cadillac makes cars for transporting people, not running over them. Gun manufacturers on the other hand make handguns for shooting people. It’s why the gun was invented. You can even get hollow point shells to make sure you blow a bigger hole in the person. We can say that they’re for sport, such as target shooting, and we can look at the targets at shooting ranges, which often have the silhouette of a person on them and figure out what it is people are practicing for. We can say they’re for hunting, and plenty are, in design, intent, and use. But what percentage of the millions of handguns in circulation are used for hunting as opposed to having around to potentially shoot someone? It’s what they’re for. I don’t care if somebody is sick in the head or not. I don’t want people to have easy access to guns and I don’t want puffed up hotheads walking around with instant death on their hips waiting for an opportunity to use them on someone. I don’t trust them or their judgment and don’t acknowledge that they have some kind of right to kill people. And which of them are sick in the head? Nobody knows, but they can get guns as easy as anyone. So whether it’s a disturbed person or a macho redneck or a hood thug or some mild mannered and well intentioned guy who is about to make a split second error that he can’t reverse, I want the guns out of their hands. We’d all be a lot safer if guns did not exist or were extremely difficult to get. The other option is everybody walks around strapped at all times, Wild West style, waiting for a possible shootout, which is of course insane. At some point the people who don’t want that kind of world will outnumber the people who want guns everywhere and we will get the kind of society we want.
