Knowing A Gay Person More Than Doubles Support For Marriage Equality

Rob Portman’s not alone — people with gay friends or family members are much more likely to support allowing them to marry.

When Republican Senator Rob Portman announced his support for gay marriage Friday, some critics said it shouldn’t have taken his son’s coming out as gay to make him stand up for LGBT rights. But Portman’s not alone: in fact, knowing a gay person is one of the biggest factors that determines support for marriage equality — and its influence is growing. More and more, it looks like Harvey Milk was right when he said that those who opposed LGBT rights would change their minds as people close to them came out.

In 2003, 39% of people with a close friend, family member, or colleague who was gay supported gay marriage, according to Pew research. Just twenty-one percent who didn’t know a gay person well supported it. Over the next four years, the gap widened — as of 2007, 55% of those who knew a gay person were in favor, compared to 25% of those who didn’t. So Americans who know a gay person are increasingly coming to favor gay marriage, while support among those who don’t know anyone is close to stagnant.

CORRECTION: The data illustrate the correlation between knowing a gay person and supporting gay marriage. An earlier title of the chart above overstated that relationship.

Fuck you. I don’t know any gay people and it’s simple social mathematics to allow the bitches to marry under law. Cuz retarded people like us married people need laws to make us feel secure and all. Not me, the rest of the simple-minded ilk called America.

Coming out is the most scary and important thing a person can do. It should not be so scary as it was 30 years ago but it is. You are afraid to hurt the ones you love and you don’t know how they will react. Maybe you do know how they will react and that is why you don’t. That’s Ok too. Everyone must do it in their own time.
Outing someone is NOT nice or a good idea.
It is one of the best things you will do for yourself when the time is right.
I do believe that one on one conversations wake people up to the fact we are not all the bad things they have been told. In fact, we are just the same as everyone else. We have homes and jobs, family and friends, likes and dislikes. We also suffer loves and break ups just like the rest of us humans. So what is the one our heart beats for is the same gender. Love is love.

The sad thing is that for the people that don’t support gay marriage and don’t know anyone gay, they probably do and just don’t know it. They probably have friends that are struggling to come out, and the gay person knows their “friend” is prejudice so they don’t say anything. Or they live in a backwards town where they are trying to “not” be gay for fear of getting abused by people. Everywhere you look there is a gay person that you just don’t know are gay. Bigoted people need to get to that reality.

This is why coming out is important. It’s not enough to know a gay person; you have to know that you know a gay person.
