As Candidate, Obama Promised To Raise The Minimum Wage Annually, But It Remains The Same

In 2008 candidate Obama promised to annually raise the minimum wage. But the federal minimum wage, controlled by Congress, today remains at $7.25 an hour, the same rate it has been since January of 2009 when the last round of wage increases signed into law by George Bush went into effect.

    1 Response So Far

    • Politicians make promises to fix what they see is wrong, when they are campaigning. Candidate Obama made a promise to increase minimum wage because he apparently thought he would have cooperation from the House and Senate on such a basic request. After all, they vote huge raises for themselves. Why not a raise for the people who cleans their houses, tend their babies, cook their meals and work at other low paying jobs. Candidate Obama also promised a lot of things but he had no way of knowing in advance that the GOP was banding together on day one to destroy his presidency by refusing to cooperate, even on programs they previously supported. I don’t blame President Obama for Congress’s failure to cease the politicking in Washington. There are three branches of government, each keeping checks and balances on the other. So far, Teabegging Republicans have decided that President Obama is going to play their game or loose the game altogether.
