Dariana 9 months agoI feel like a broken record, constantly iterating this whenever a new crop of colloquialisms is added to the dictionary—but here it is, for what it’s worth: MW is a descriptivist dictionary. This means if it is used and understood by Americans, it’s fair game to be included in the dictionary. A prescriptivist dictionary, like the OED, tries not to include colloquialisms for a long time (I suppose to make sure they are not a passing fad), at least until they are fully integrated into the language. MW describes language in it’s current state, whilst the OED tries to correct it.
