What Online Tracking Looks Like In Real Time

A Firefox plug-in called Collusion maps third parties tracking you online, as you browse. Below is what happens every time you visit a new website.

The punchline: a lot of people are following you around online!

To test out the tool, we visited the Huffington Post, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Fox News, SlashFilm and The Onion. By the end, we'd loaded content from almost 50 different third-parties, through content partnerships (like the AOL posts that showed up on Huffpo) ad networks, and good old Facebook. Here's what our graph looked like by the end:
