Police have reportedly arrested a Philadelphia-area mother after she allegedly abandoned her quadriplegic 21-year-old son in the woods last week.
Nyia Parler, 41, was arrested in Maryland after her son was found abandoned in a Philadelphia park on Friday, CBS Philly reported.
Her son, whose name was not released, suffers from cerebral palsy.
He was found with a blanket and a Bible but no food or water, CBS Philly reported. His wheelchair was found nearby.
Parler is accused of abandoning her son on Monday so she could board a bus to Maryland with her boyfriend, Philly.com reported.
The young man is being treated for malnutrition and dehydration at a local hospital.
He also is suffering from a cut on his back and he may have damaged his eyes in the cold and rain, Philly.com reported.
Philadelphia Police Lt. John Walker said that the victim is "obviously a fighter."
"It's just unbelievable how we found him out there...It's absolutely heartbreaking to see another human, especially a mother, can treat someone like that," Walker told Philly.com.
Walker said that the man's aunts had attempted to obtain custody of him in the past, Philly.com reported.
Parler is facing charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, reckless endangerment of another person, neglect of a care dependent person, simple assault, and unlawful restraint, CBS Philly reported.
