An apparent drive-by shooting at a Stockton, California, convenience store Tuesday night left three people dead and four others injured, police said, in the city's worst mass shooting in recent memory.

Police responded to the shooting at Madison Market at around 8:25 p.m. Tuesday where multiple victims were found dead and wounded outside and in the market, the Stockton Record reported.

Two women and a man were killed in the shooting, police said. One victim was declared dead at the scene while two others others died at a hospital. The four other injured victims were expected to survive.

It was not immediately known what sparked the shooting. A description of the gunman or vehicle used in the shooting was also not available.

Joe Silva, a Stockton Police spokesman, said the shooting took place in a high-crime area near the city's downtown.

"I can't remember a recent time where we've had seven gunshot victims," Silva told the Record. "Due to the number of victims, we've had to call in additional resources. We've called in extra homicide detectives along with gang investigators because this area is known for its gang activity."

SHOOTING UPDATE: This is now a triple homicide.
