At least two people were injured Tuesday night in Ferguson, Missouri, after gunfire broke out during protests.

The first shooting occurred on West Florissant Ave., the epicenter of protests last August, and left one man with a leg injury, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. The man was carried to a nearby restaurant.

St. Louis County Police communications supervisor Paul Jackson confirmed to BuzzFeed News that there were reports of a shooting around 9:30 p.m., and then again about two hours later.

"At least twice gun fire was heard," Jackson said. "There may have been more."

A suspect was arrested following the first shooting, the Post-Dispatch reported.

Jackson could not confirm reports that people were injured, saying officers were still at the scene investigating early Wednesday. He also did not have information about arrests.

Following the first shooting, police increased their presence on the street, ordering protesters to disperse under threat of arrest and "chemical munitions."

Jackson said the St. Louis County Police Department was among the agencies patrolling hundreds of protesters who came out Tuesday night. The protest was timed to coincide with the demonstration in Baltimore over the death of Freddie Gray.

The second shooting happened sometime after 11 p.m. when several volleys of gunshots rang out and, according to witnesses and police scanner traffic, at least one person was injured.

In videos posted online, a lengthy series of pops — identified by witnesses as gunfire — could be heard. One video also showed a man lying on the ground while still more shots rang out in the background.

The Post-Dispatch reported one person was wounded on Windward Court, near the location where Michael Brown was killed last August. Protesters at the scene had retreated to the area, the newspaper reported.

Images later showed some protesters lighting fires on nearby Ferguson streets.
