16 People Dead In Suicide Bombing At Afghan Funeral

The service in eastern Laghman province was for victims of an earlier Taliban attack. Thirty-nine people were also wounded. It is the latest in a spate of attacks in the country.

A suicide bomber struck a funeral for the victims of a previous Taliban attack in Laghman province on Thursday, killing 16 and wounding 39, the AP reported, citing an Afghan official.

The funeral, which took place in the provincial capital, Mihtarlam, was for a police commander and three other people who were killed earlier in the day in a roadside bombing.

Sarhadi Zwak, a spokesman for the local governor, said police investigations chief Khlil Nyazi was among those killed in the funeral bombing, and three other officers were among those wounded.

No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing as yet, but the Taliban have carried out similar attacks in the past.

The attack is the worst in a spate of bombings to hit the country on Wednesday night and Thursday.

Taliban insurgents in central Ghanzi province attacked a checkpoint in Andar district on Wednesday night, killing 11 pro-government militia and wounding six. Six insurgents were killed in the ensuing gunfight, the AP cited the province's deputy governor as saying.

In Wardak province, east of Kabul, local government spokesman Attaullha Khugyani said Taliban fighters dragged two villagers out of their homes before killing them, the AP reported.

Since the withdrawal of the majority of foreign combat troops from Afghanistan last month, insurgents have increasingly been targeting Afghan forces and police.
