15 Things We Learned From Caitlyn Jenner's First Cover Story

Buzz Bissinger spent three months following Jenner to discuss her transition, her E! docuseries, her regrets, and her hope for the future in an interview for Vanity Fair.

1. The Vanity Fair photo shoot happened just a few weeks ago, and Caitlyn Jenner's oldest daughter, Cassandra, was there the whole day.

Photographer Annie Leibovitz came to shoot Jenner at her Malibu home on May 6.

2. Jenner started transitioning for the first time in the late 1980s, taking hormones for breast growth and beginning a regimen of electrolysis to remove facial hair.

3. Jenner had a different name picked out at that time.

She joked to Bissinger that she thought about going to Denmark and coming back as Aunt Heather to her four children, Cassandra, Burt, Brandon, and Brody.

4. Jenner thinks she didn't do a good job raising her four oldest children.

ABC News

"I have made a lot of mistakes raising the four Jenner kids. I had times not only dealing with my own issues but exes. [It was] very traumatic and there was a lot of turmoil in my life, and I wasn't as close to my kids as I should have been," she said in the Vanity Fair interview.

5. Kris Jenner told Vanity Fair she "disputes" Caitlyn's claims that Kris said Caitlyn could only go out in women's clothes when she was out of town.

6. Jenner hasn't had genital surgery.

She has had two nose jobs, a tracheal shave, a facial feminization surgery (which took 10 hours), and breast augmentation.

7. Jenner initially, and briefly, regretted going through with the transition.

The day after her surgery, she had a panic attack, thinking, What did I just do? But Jenner told Bissinger the attack only lasted about 15 seconds.

8. Jenner has "girls' nights" with her children.

Her daughters and close female friends have been having "girls' nights" with Caitlyn, where she dresses in what makes her "feel natural." They drink wine, eat, and discuss everything, from clothes to more serious topics. It was during a "girls' night" that Jenner's oldest daughter, Cassandra, met Caitlyn for the first time.

9. Jenner watched the Diane Sawyer interview live, twice.

ABC News

First, she watched the East Coast feed with the Kardashian-Jenner clan with Kendall and Kylie on either side of her. Caitlyn then watched the West Coast feed with her four older Jenner kids — Cassandra, Burt, Brandon, and Brody — and their mothers/her exes — Chrystie Crownover and Linda Thompson.

10. Jenner still sometimes introduces herself as "Bruce" by accident.

Vanity Fair

"A guy came in the other day and I was fully dressed — it's just habit, I said, 'Hi, Bruce here,' and I went, 'Oh fuck, it ain't Bruce,' I was screwing up doing it."

11. Jenner's transition will likely not be a part of the E! docuseries.

Vanity Fair

The upcoming docuseries started filming in May, but Bissinger notes in the Vanity Fair piece that Jenner had completed her transition by the time the Diane Sawyer interview aired on April 24.

12. The four older kids are not thrilled about Jenner's E! docuseries.

ABC News

They're especially unhappy Caitlyn is using the same production company as Keeping Up With the Kardashians. And at this point, none of them are willing to participate in the series.

13. The docuseries will be used as a platform for transgender issues.

Vanity Fair

"The E! show will focus on ways of lowering the rates of suicide and attempted suicide, among other issues," Jenner said. Bissinger added: "Caitlyn also plans a segment in which she sees if she can still hit a golf ball 300 yards off the tee, even with those very ample breasts. There is a road trip planned, in which Caitlyn and several transgender women will take an R.V. from the Los Angeles area to San Francisco to visit a center for transgender youth, and then on to Napa Valley."

14. All of Jenner's children are expected to be there when she receives the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the ESPYs next month.

Cassandra, Burt, Brandon, Brody, Kourtney, Kim, Khloé, Rob, Kendall, and Kylie are all planning to join their parent/stepparent on stage.

15. And Jenner, who was once terrified of the paparazzi outing her, is slowly starting to embrace them.

Vanity Fair

"She can't wait when she goes out now to tell the paparazzi to 'make sure it's a good shot,'" Bissinger wrote.
