These Are The Refugees Coming To Germany In Hope Of A Better Life

Hundreds of refugees wait at the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Services every day, where they have to get registered once they arrive in Berlin.

For weeks, hundreds of refugees have been waiting in front of the State Office for Health and Social Services (locally known as the LaGeSo) in Berlin. In August, when a heatwave hit the city, the conditions were grim.

Once they arrive in Berlin, they get a temporary place where they can stay until the German officials have decided if they are granted asylum.

This is Fershte from Afghanistan. She is 36.

Fershte fled Afghanistan because her husband was killed. When I met her, she had been waiting in front of the LaGeSo for five days. Before arriving there, she was staying in Hamburg.


This is Eddy from Benin. He is 25.

Eddy's mother died when he was 4. After his father passed away, too, he could not find work, so he came to Germany. He says this is his only chance.

This is Ibrahim from Afghanistan. He is 16.

Ibrahim fled Afghanistan because his family was persecuted. He is the only one in the family who made it out of the country. When we met him, he had been waiting for four days to get registered.

This is Delal from Syria. She is 8. She said her three sisters could not come with her and had to stay in Syria.

Delal and her father fled from Syria. They crossed Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Hungary, and Austria to come to Germany.


This is the piece of paper everybody here is looking for. Once they have it, the refugees have to wait until they are called on.
