Mike Huckabee Reminds His Listeners That The Government Didn’t Create Viagra

"Think of every recent innovation that's made your life better. Some might say Microsoft, but I prefer Apple. There's the iPad, the iPhone, there's eBay, Amazon, Uber, even Viagra."

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has a reminder for his podcast listeners: the little blue pill came from the private sector, not the government.

Huckabee telling listeners of his Huckabee Exclusive podcast that Microsoft founder Bill Gates was wrong to say in an interview with The Atlantic that government research and development were vital to developing alternative energy to stem the challenge of climate change.

"Gates said that the government will have to lead a massive effort on climate change because, quote, 'since World War Two, U.S. government R&D has defined the state of the art in almost every area, the private sector, is, in general, is inept.' End quote," Huckabee said on his podcast.

"Really? So Solyndra was a brilliant investment? Think of every recent innovation that's made your life better. Some might say Microsoft, but I prefer Apple. There's the iPad, the iPhone, there's eBay, Amazon, Uber, even Viagra. How many were developed by the government? Some, like Uber, the government is actually trying to kill."

Huckabee continued, "True, the government did start the Internet. Anyone old enough to remember trying to use it before private industry created browsers? And considering the Pentagon just spent $45 million of our money to build a useless natural gas filling station in Afghanistan, can anyone imagine how big, clunky, and overpriced a government designed iPhone would be? Only the government could take all the smart out of smart phones." (Ed. Note: The first web browser, WorldWideWeb, was created by Tim Berners-Lee, a British scientist at CERN. CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a government-funded research organization).
