Police said gunmen opened fire at a baby’s birthday party in Peregrine Park in Sacramento, Calif., on Saturday, killing one man and injuring six other people, including a 7-year-old child.
Officer Doug Morse told the Sacramento Bee that attackers walked up to a group that had gathered to celebrate the birthday of a 1-year-old child around 5 p.m. and opened fire, then fled in a car.
“There were so many eyewitnesses,” Morse said. “Detectives are trying to talk to everyone they can.”
Among the witnesses was Denise James, who told the Sacramento Bee that the man who was fatally shot was her 29-year-old son-in-law and the father of a young boy.
“They came in the party and shot my son-in-law,” James said. “They took him away too early.”
The man who died is believed to be a gang member. His name has not been publicly released. Officer Morse says six other people — including the 7-year-old child — suffered injuries, none of which were life-threatening.
Police say the attack seems to be gang-related.
