Latest "Immigrant X" Comic Frames Asylum Interviews As Torture

Writer Robert Simpson and artist Ana Patankar use comic strips to tell fictional stories of undocumented immigrants throughout the world and the people who help them.

The story posted on Twitter Wednesday centers around a woman who fled a refugee camp after watching her husband's execution.

Robert Simpson, the creator and writer of Immigrant X, said they focused on interviews given by asylum seekers because many refugees are caught in a process that is often opaque and drawn out.

"People are asked to relive their experience again and again to see if their story is real," Simpson told BuzzFeed News. "It's a terrible thing to do to people."

The exact setting of the story is purposely left out, Simpson said, because it's an immigrant story shared by many across the world.

"This is the Immigrant X story," Simpson said, "it could easily be Europe or Australia, Canada, or the U.S."
